More Painting (1/30): Saturday, I started on a new watercolor - again inspired by the Harold Joe Waldrum polaroids on display at the Albuquerque museum. Frani and I went to the members opening on Friday night. I'm working on hot press paper which I don't like. It's was all I had stretched. I'll have to soak some Arches rough and stretch it - that works so much better for me. |

WFWS (1/27): Yesterday, I sent off the final results for artists who were accepted into this years WFWS exhibit. The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies is made up of eleven watercolor societies through out the west. I sent the results to the delegates in each society and they contact their artists who entered. 494 artists entered 1066 paintings for consideration in this years WFWS exhibit. Only 125 paintings were selected by our juror Dale Laitinen. This will be the 36th annual exhibit. It opens with a gala awards banquet on May 6th in Albuquerque. Each year a different cociety hosts the exhibition in rotation. Our juror, Dale Laitinen is doing a 4 day watercolor workshop just before the WFWS exhibition opens. From May 2nd through the 5th he will be teaching his workshop at the Hispanic Arts building (Expo New Mexico) here in Albuquerque. Any member of one of the societies can take the workshop for $250.00. Also during the run of the exhibit, May 6th till June 5th, several artists will be giving free demos. I personally plan to teach a 2 hour watercolor workshop for 5th graders as well. It's going the be a very busy schedule for the month. click here for registration form >>>

Albuquerque Museum (1/24): This Monday mornings docent training was about the next major exhibition, A Passionate Light: Polaroids by H. Joe Waldrum. This exhibition, composed of more than 900 of Waldrum’s one-of-a-kind SX-70 Polaroid images, is the largest grouping of Waldrum’s Polaroids ever. Seeing images he created of New Mexico churches got me back into that subject for my watercolors. Waldrum’s foray into Polaroid photography began more or less as an accident. One evening as the sun was fading away, Waldrum realized that he didn’t have time to make his usual sketches, so he quickly drove to the closest supermarket, purchased a Polaroid “OneStep” camera and instantly captured the architectural details and profiles of the church at Las Trampas in northern New Mexico. Upon returning to his New York studio, he pulled out these hurriedly snapped photos and realized the photographs captured more than just images; they documented his thinking and looking process. Diet (1/23): My weight is holding at about eight pounds down since the holidays. I broke from my diet on Friday when we went to our Favorite Chinese Buffet. I did feel guilty - but it tasted so-so good. I had forgotten what real food tasted like. The Hong Kong Buffet used to be named Lin's But for some reason changed it's name. I had Sweet and Sour Chicken, Fried Rice, BBQ Pork Ribs, General Taos Chicken, Egg Drop Soup, Egg Rolls, and of course Apple Cobbler topped with Real Ice Cream. We of course got our senior discount. ...

Sad Day in Lawrence:I watched, with other KU alumns, at the Fox and Hound as KU lost a home game in Lawrence against Texas. It was the Jayhawks first loss of the season. Today's loss broke the 69 game home winning record. You could see tears on the faces in the crowd at Allen Field House. ...

Friday Painting (1/21): Went painting with friends at the Unitarian Church this morning. Continued some progress on the one I started last Friday and started a new watercolor. This time the subject is the church at Las Trampas on the high road to Taos. |

MasterWorks (1/19): I decided to roll over my entries from WFWS to a local show. I'm entering the same three watercolors into MasterWorks of New Mexico. It's a prestigious state wide juried show open only to New Mexico artists. |
||||
Western Fed (1/18): Sixteen New Mexico artists were accepted into the WFWS juried show. I got the results from our juror Dale Laitinen yesterday. He is presently doing a workshop in Flordia. My three paintings were rejected. Of course there was lots of tough competition. 494 artists submitted 1066 paintings and only 120 got into the show. ...

Watercolor Entries (1/4): I decided on my entries for national watercolor shows in Missouri and Georgia today. I got into the Missouri Watercolor Society show last year. I have never entered the Georgia exhibition before. My Georgia Entries Above My Missouri Entries Above The
two watercolors I'm submitting to Missouri have never been in a juried
show. Both are full sheets. The three I'm submitting to the exhibition
in Georgia have all been selected by jurors before. Georgia has no
restriction against the entries having been in other national shows.

Colcha (1/3): Docent training started back up this morning. Today's topic was the new "Colcha" exhibit. Traditional New Mexican colcha embroidery dates back to the 1700s. Colcha embroidery is a technique that traces back to the Hispanic settlers of New Mexico and a tradition that continues to this day. Colcha, which means “bedcover” in Spanish, is an embroidered quick stitch that was originally limited to handspun and dyed wool from churro sheep. This exhibition was originally organized by the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum (NMFR) in Las Cruces. Video: This morning, we also got to preview the new docent training video which I had an acting part in. It shows docents giving tours in both the right and wrong ways. It was a hoot to watch. |
