Cookie

Finished Painting (4/28):
This was our final Saturday Paint Group till Fall. I finished my painting of the triplet's rooster "Cookie". Afterward painting and critique, we all went out to eat. We do get painting done but our group is really social.

Gathering of Nations Pow Wow (4/27):

My bride and I went to the annual "Gathering of Nations - Pow Wow" this morning, at the UNM Pit. It's always a beautiful festival of color and dance. When I picked up the morning paper, the next day, there was a photo of us in my Chevy. We had stopped at a crosswalk to allow a dancer to cross. Only I would recognize my new car.

Art & Balloons (4/22):

Art and Balloons, two good reasons to be in Albuquerque. And, the best thing about Albuquerque is that it is surrounded by New Mexico. This morning a huge dark shadow covered our house - It alerted me that hot air balloons were up today. Perhaps because it's Earthday or just because it's a beautiful day.
I had finally gotten out of the house yesterday. I went to join my Saturday paint group. We were having a demo by Jeanne Hyland. I really enjoyed her courage with jumping right in with bold colors. I'm going to enjoy taking a workshop from her later this year. Afterwards, I went over to Doe's house. She was hosting our annual "Tea" for the newest members of the watercolor society. I answered questions about NMWS and we each got an opportunity to explain how we got into watercolor.

My First Rose of 2012

I'm Back (4/19):
We were off to Las Vegas for the WFWS exhibitions and related meetings. As the delegate from New Mexico, this has been my obligation for the last three years. Donna Dionne is my alternate and will take over as delegate after this year. Las Vegas is a strange place - a Disneyland for adults. Not a place my bride and I really enjoy. But the NWS were great hosts and the hotel they selected was very comfortable.
On Saturday, we took the shuttle to the strip. Lots of walking - we had a steak at the Outback and took in Circus Ole at Treasure Island - a fantastic show. The crowds along the strip were unbelievable. Tens of thousands of bodies moving along - that was a show in itself. We are people watchers - and could not believe how many people were there that did
appear to be enjoying themselves - sad.
On the way back to Albuquerque, I started feeling strange (1/2 way back to Albuquerque on I-40) I got a fever, felt weak and dizzy, etc. For me to turn over the driving to my sweet wife - I must have really felt bad - especially with my new car. She's a great driver but I'm the world's worst passenger - I must be in control on the road.

Being Sick Is Not Fun:
I have not been sick in the 7 years we have lived in New Mexico. It is not fun, especially when you are old. I sent most of three days in bed and I still feel weak. Getting old is a BUMMER.
I always carry my camera around. Below is a shot I took of my bride and I riding in the hotel elevator. The mirrors made each ride a house of fun.

Grand Canyon:
On the way to Las Vegas, we stayed one night in Flagstaff so we could take a side trip to the Grand Canyon. The weather was a bit chilly but it never rained. As we drove away it began to rain, then it got harder and harder. So, we stopped to eat a Denny's near Williams. As we ate lunch it began to snow. We drove out of the snow quickly because the terrain drops a couple thousand feet just after Williams.
On our trip back through Williams and Flagstaff, we saw lots of snow. We really lucked out on the morning we chose to visit the Canyon.

Easter (4/8):
For Easter Breakfast - I made French Toast with Strawberries for Frani - Then for Easter Dinner - Frani baked a ham, we had fried potatoes with onions and green chili - steamed broccoli & carrots - fresh baked rolls - later we finished the day with warm apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream - Why do I stay with this lady ?
After breakfast - I went to Kinkos to run off copies of the NMWS Final Report for the WFWS delegate meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada. We head out Tuesday morning for Las Vegas. We plan to stay in Flagstaff over night and make a side trip to the Grand Canyon. Our last visit to the canyon was three years ago with Bud, Shari and the triplets.

One Great Couple (4/7):

I found out via Facebook that Margarita and Napoleon got married. They failed to send me an invitation. Congrats to Nate and Maggie - the very best to you.

Progress on "Cookie"

MasterWorks Opening (4/6)

It was a great opening (as usual) at MasterWorks. My self-portrait got lots of complements. Don't miss this great exhibition. It will be up all month.
I'm making progress on my newest watercolor of "Cookie". He was the last of my grandkids chickens. He won't destroy any more geraniums because a hungry coyote finally got him.

Art At The Center - Overland Park (4/5):
For my Kansas City area friends - I have two watercolors in the Art at the Center Juried Exhibition this year.
The Opening Reception of the Exhibition is Friday, April 6, 2012 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm - the Awards Presentations is at 6pm.  The Guest Juror and Internationally Acclaimed Artist Kwan Wu should be there.

April Snow (4/3):
My Jayhawks did not win last night. Kentucky played extreamly well and deserve their title. Kansas had a fantastic season and their fans are proud of them. But, we did have snow this morning. Of course it all melted. It's still on the mountain where it belongs. I took a photo at 6:45 pm from our backyard - using a 300 mm lens.

Kansas vs Kentucky (4/2):
Tonight's game is a must - I'll join the other KU alumni at Fox and Hound here in Albuquerque to watch our team. No matter how it comes out, we are all proud of our team. The photos below were taken about ten years ago at our house in Kansas City. These little Jayhawks are now 13 years old.

"Morning Launch" (4/1):
Saturday morning, I finished my newest watercolor. I love the way the source of the illumination comes from the balloon's flame. I enjoy going to the Annual Balloon Fiesta to shoot photos of the launch. It's a real bonus of living in Albuquerque.

Betty Carr
Workshop Registration

New Mexico Watercolor Society:
The NMWS website http://www.nmwatercolorsociety.org/ is now up to date. Our beautiful Web Mistress, Marcella, has moved to Chile. Yes, Chile - the country in South America occupying a long, narrow strip between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. But, she still updated the web site from her new home way down there. It is truly a small world.
