"Blossom's Tounge"
Finished
...

New Painting Finished (1/31):
Last night, I finished my newest watercolor titled "Blossom's Tounge". I'll put it in a mat and bring it to Saturday's NMWS meeting. This is our critique meeting.

I posted "Blossoms Tounge" on http://www.artistdaily.com/ So far I've posted over 50 watercolors since Sept of 2009 - I checked and the first watercolor I posted, back then, was of Blossom. I notice that the rose I posted in November had more views than any of my paintings - perhaps it's good or people just like roses.

Printmaking Exhibit (1/30):
At noon today, Sandy Humphries explained a range of printmaking methods to the museum docents. The Albuquerque museum has a show opening Friday: Goya's "Los Caprichos" and Social Satire - it runs February 5, 2012 to May 13, 2012 (in the North Gallery). I love printmaking and will encourage the NMWS members at out Saturday meeting to stay and take in the new exhibition.

Working on a Watercolor of Blossom (1/29):

I started the painting of Blossom on Friday morning. Saturday, I almost finished it. It still needs a bit of work. I plan to finish it up, put it in a mat and take it to the watercolor meeting this Saturday morning. Once a year we ask members to bring a painting for critique. Bud and Laurie do the critiques. I hope they are kind to Blossom.
Lately, I have not done much painting. I've been too busy accepting everyone's watercolor entries for MasterWorks of New Mexico. This morning I met with the other file managers (Oil - Acrylic and Pastel) to turn over our entries. The images will be sent to three jurors to rate the work. The highest total scores will determine who is selected for the show. There were 205 watercolors by 94 artists submitted. Only 47 will be in the exhibition.

Bloosom Movie (1/26):

A few days ago I was plying with the movie feature on my new i-pad. Blossom was playing with her toy too. So I shot a short movie. We both love our toys.

Our Mountain (1/25):
I keep my camera handy because our view of the Sandia is different every day. The clouds were enveloping sections of our mountain today. I'm using a 300 mm lens to take most of the close up shots.

Docent Tours (1/24):
Every other Tuesday, our Docent Team takes school groups through the Albuquerque Museum. Today we had a delightful group of 2nd graders. Each of us took 7 or 8 students through the art and history portions of the collection. I was first docent this time so I decided the art project would be "Tin Work". It always goes over well with 2nd graders.

NM Art to Washington DC (1/21):
Had a very productive meeting this afternoon to plan an exhibit of New Mexico art students artwork in Washington DC this August - Wonderful opportunity - need to do everything possible to make this happen right to show off the state of art education in the land of enchantment. We plan to contact NMAEA members to submit art to be juried for the exhibit. It will be displayed in the Department of Education building in the nations capitol.

Betty Carr Workshop (1/20):

NMWS members have another great watercolor workshop just before the Spring Members Exhibition. Four full days of instruction by Betty Carr for only $220. These workshops sponsored by the NMWS are such a fantastic deal. Great instruction plus you don't need to travel and rent a hotel. Stay at home, even bring a sack lunch - plus, paint with your friends and fellow artists. Register soon before the workshop fills up.

Art In Schools:
There is so much truth in this cartoon. It's a sorry state of our schools when the arts slowly dissappear. This artist puts all the color outside the classroom window. It's much like what Dorothy found in the Land of OZ. Let's bring color back into education.

Feburary Brushstrokes

NM Watercolor Society (1/18):
Watercolor is strong in New Mexico. Yesterday, I shipped ten New Mexico artist's paintings off to the WFWS juried exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our February newsletter (Brushstrokes) just went to the printer. Entries are coming in daily for the watercolor portion of MasterWorks of New Mexico. The entry deadline is January 27th. NMWS has it's own "Members Only" juried exhitit in May. The prospectus went out with our February newsletter. Below are two photos from the February newsletter.

Painting For Colorado:

I got my notice today, telling me that one of my watercolors "Balloon Fiesta Sunrise" was accepted into "Rockies West National". I need to frame it and ship it in mid-February. The exhibit runs from March 1st through April 6th. There is a reception on Friday, March 2nd. We are thinking about driving up to Grand Junction, Colorado for the reception.

Awesome babeee! (1/17):
Yesterday in Lawrence: Dick Vitale removed his headphones, leaned forward in his press row seat and proceeded to lavish praise on Kansas University’s basketball team late Monday night in Allen Fieldhouse. “Today it was the Robinson/Taylor show. The inside/outside combination now of Taylor and Robinson is really special,” ESPN broadcasting legend Vitale said after Tyshawn Taylor matched his career high of 28 points (for the second-straight game), and Thomas Robinson chipped in 27 points and 14 rebounds in the Jayhawks’ 92-74 rout of previously undefeated Baylor.

Ready For Las Vegas (1/16):

Donna and I packed up the New Mexico paintings that were accepted into WFWS show in Las Vegas. I'll ship them off with FedEx tomorrow.

New Look On Facebook (1/15):
I really like the new look on facebook - they call it "timeline". I put three images together to get it to look the way I wanted. I combined a shot of our house with bloons overhead with a watercolor I did of Tiff and Tim at White Sands National Monument. Then I attached my portrait reflected in windows at the Balloon Museum.

...

Paint Out (1/14):
Several members of the watercolor society painted at the Bio Park in Albuquerque today. They have a large glass structure chocked full of blooming plants. Its warm and humid inside to keep the flowers (and artists) happy. What a wonderful place to paint when the ducks are walking on an ice covered pond just outside. We plan to do the very same thing next month.

...

Finished Portrait (1/13):

This morning I got back to painting. Joined my friends at our Friday Painter's Group. I had not touched a paintbrush since before the holidays. I finished up the portrait of our 13 year old grandson Tim. He's shown in his football jersey - joining the band at half time.

More Entries for Louisiana (1/12):
When I sent my entries off to Louisiana - I decided to send five instead of just three. Below are the two additional entries. Both have been in other National shows before - but, Louisiana has no restrictions against entering them.

"Jazz Singer"           and        "Ticket to Ride"

Got Obama's Back ? (1/11):
Why ? I was asked - Because if we do nothing, then the republican's will get back in and really screw things up. Think about the Supreme Court packed with more conservative judges. That alone is good enough reason.

Back Home (1/10):
Today, FedEx delivered my watercolor that had been in the art museum in Jackson, Mississippi. I had wanted the box to come back empty (meaning it sold) but, no such luck.

Our Mountain (1/9):

I was wanting to shoot a photo of the full moon raising over the Sandia yesterday - but, the clouds got in the way. A little earlier, I was able to shoot a decent photo of our mountain.

Weight Loss (1/8):
Another year - another resolution to loose some weight. I've done it before, and this year I'm going to stick with it. I'm down over 4 lbs in less than a week since we returned from Kansas. Actually, I lost an earlier 4 lbs over the holiday back in Kansas. We bought a new scale when we went shopping for salad stuff last week. Most importantly, I need to avoid breads and potatoes.
In six days now, I'm at 231.9 pounds. I have less that 29 lbs to go to reach my goal of 203 by June. I've started fixing oatmeal for breakfast with a bit of brown sugar, some raisins and pecans for flavor. For lunch, I'm having low fat cottage cheese with tomatoes or pears. We usually have big salads for dinner with chicken last night. If I have salmon - it's with rice and steamed veggies. Tonight, we split a steak to celebrate.
I'd be out walking if it were not for this bum ankle. I'll call the foot doctor again to see if there is a better fix. Walking is the secret to really getting back in shape.

Watercolor Meeting (1/7):
Writing in the presents of real art in a museum setting - That's what we did at January's NM watercolor society meeting this morning. Lauren Camp led us through the process - http://www.laurencamp.com/  Lauren is a poet, a visual artist and does a radio show about jazz from Santa Fe. For six years, Lauren hosted “The Colors of Jazz” on Santa Fe Public Radio KSFR 101.1 FM. On her show, music from the 100-year history of jazz flowed together into sets of ragtime, swing and avant garde, blending in a way that kept listeners guessing — and listening.
Being out of our element, for many of us, was a bit difficult. Several members read what they had written which reassured us that the process was well worth the effort.

Louisiana Watercolor Exhibit (1/4):
I decided to enter the same three watercolors into the show in Louisiana that were rejected from WFWS in Las Vegas. I would be a real plus to be in this show since Dean Mitchell is the juror this year. I'd also love to have an excuse to visit New Orleans again.

Ralph and Connie

Old Friend (1/3):
Between Christmas and New Years, Frani and I drove down to Pittsburg, Kansas to visit a friend of mine from childhood.  We spent a delightful day with Ralph and Connie. I lived in Pittsburg till the 4th grade, then we moved to Kansas City. Ralph and I were best friends. We swam in the strip pits, smoked catalpa beans, ran wild, pissed on electrified fences and fought a lot as well. I visited him when I was in high school - but, had lost touch for over 50 years.
Turns out, Ralph is a Democrat (of course). He was even mayor of Pittsburg for a while and a county commissioner in Crawford County. Pittsburg, Hayes and Kansas City are the only three pockets of Democrats in that very republican state. He drove us around to see the way the city had changed - many of the changes he had a hand in making take place.

Happy New Year (1/2):
We returned from Christmas in Kansas this afternoon. As much as we love our family - it's always good to be home. To sleep in our own bed, use our own shower, etc. I picked up some KFC for an easy dinner and we began unpacking everything.
My bride got to visit with her mom several times this trip. We also had a chance to visit with both of our sons. It's a 14 hour drive from Kansas City to Albuquerque. Coming and going we listened to the new Bio about Steve Jobs. We also listened to it the several times we drove into KC and when we drove to Pittsburg. Turns out it was a 600 page book - over 25 hours of audio. We learned that Jobs was a creative genius (which we knew) - but he was a real SOB to work for. I'm typing these words on my new MacBook Pro and I love my new i-Pad 2. Job's change the world in a major way. I hope Apple continues to innovate without him. He brought art and technology together.
