Mike Theno on the Right Me on the Phone |
Passing of a Friend (6/28): I just got a facebook post from Gary Blumenthal that our friend from the McGovern campaign in 1972 passed away. I can not envision Mike as anything other than the young vibriant kid I knew back then. "Mike Theno was our 21 year old strategic leader, along with Woody Duncan, leading the 1972 Kansas McGovern campaign. We shocked the then political establishment and ended up as delegates and alternates to the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Mike went on to become a political science professor, Woody, a renowned and respected artist and teacher; and me, a Kansas legislator, teacher and agency director. Those were fascinating years. Rest in peace in Mike." Gary Blumenthal ...

My Sore Head |
My Sore Head (6/27): Yesterday, a surgeon cut the Melanoma (skin cancer) from my forehead. Then she stitched it up and sent me home. There wasn't any pain until the drugs (local anesthetic) wore off. I had a hard time sleeping last night - but, it's eased quite a bit today. I'm told to wear sunscreen every day. There's a lot more UV at these high altitudes we live at now. (5000 ft at home - 7000 ft in Taos). I did wear a hat when I painted outside in Taos - but, that was after the fact - too late. While in the waiting room at the doctors, I edited photos from my week of painting in Taos. I have photos of 68 paintings done by participants in this year's workshop. I'll create a web page later with some of those paintings later including shots of artists working around the Sagebruish Inn. Last year, I failed to post any photos from our week in Taos. ...

Frani's Hibiscus |
Breakfast at the Museum (6/25): This morning I was at the museum for breakfast with friends. It's a complementary breakfast to thank the staff and volunteers at the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. It was a good time to visit with fellow docents. When I returned from breakfast, Frani was in the backyard dead heading my rose bushes. I had to shoot pics of her hibiscus, it had 9 new blooms on it. |

Arts & Crafts (6/23): My bride and I attended the New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair at Expo New Mexico yesterday. Lots of interesting creations to look at - but, we did not purchase anything. Frani did lots of looking and then waiting on me while I visited with artists. It was an opportunity for me to visit with several friends who had their paintings displayed. ...

Beautiful Music (6/21): Last night, we attended a concert by "Alison Krauss & Union Station" at the Kiva Auditorium in downtown Albuquerque. It was a wonderful evening of music. We also discovered that Buffy Saint Marie will be performing in Albuquerque (at the Kimo) in August. Also, Bonnie Raitt will be at the Santa Fe Opera later in September. I need to get us tickets to both events. It's a great year for music. |

Jodie Foster in Contact |
100 Year Starship: In my opinion they should include an artist on the first voyage to the stars - I remember Jodie Foster saying "They should have sent a poet" in the movie Contact. Invitations are out to submit to the “Call for Papers” the upcoming 100 Year StarshipTM 2012 Public Symposium to be held in Houston Texas on September 13 – 16, 2012. If you have any questions, please contact the 2012 Symposium Technical Chair, Dr. Richard Obousy at richard.obousy@100YSS.org. We look forward to your participation in our symposium and hope that you will submit a paper. Sincerely, Mae Jemison, M.D. Chair, 100YSS Symposium In 1985, I read Carl Sagan's novel "Contact". That was also the first year I drove to Taos to paint. The first Starship sent to the stars should bear his name - in my opinion. ...

Finished Portrait |
NMWS June Meeting (6/19): Last
night, I turned the leadership of the watercolor society over to Karin
Pitman. It was a great meeting. We had a good turnout - because of Ruth
Andrews-Vreeland's portrait demo. She did a wonderful job of explaining
her process. It's good to see how different artists approach painting.
But, it's even better to learn about their background and how they
developed as an artist. Ruth began with a powerpoint of some of her
earlier work. We learned about Ruth as well as her art. I posted ten
photos from Ruth's demo on the NMWS facebook page at:

Back From Taos (6/17): I'm back home from another wonderful week in Taos. I sleep so much better in my own bed next to someone I love. I awoke this morning to the gentle aroma of cereal baking from the nearby General Mills plant. I hear the sputtering sound of the drip system coming on to water my rose bushes. My Sunday paper was in the driveway and my dog wanted to go out to do her business. Frani told me that Blossom would lay with her face in my slippers waiting for me to get home, at least someone loves me. After I take a hot shower, with real water pressure, then I'll start the day with an e-mail reminding folks about Monday's watercolor meeting. |

My Whitewater Trip in 1994 I'm in the Blue & White T-shirt |
Water Fun in the Rio Grande: On my way back from Taos, I stopped along the Rio Grande to shoot photos of rafters. The river is low this year, but they seem to be enjoying the water anyway. Years ago, I fondly remember taking a couple whitewater trips myself. I posted ten of the photos on my facebook page. |

That's Me, Drawing at Arroyo Seco ... |
Relaxing in Taos (6/13): We went to Arroyo Seco this morning. I really wanted to just wander around and photograph - but, the battery went out in my camera. So, I got the lawn chair out and decided to paint. I'm just not use to painting plein air. I was so unhappy with what I painted that I pasted paper all over the image, when we got back, I'll turn it into something else. Later, when we returned to the Sagebrush, I did a painting of some yellow trees from last October in Taos. It's an image I've painted before - it turned out better this time. Now, I'm sitting in front of my room - drinking Sangria and updating my blog. I'm a studio painter - I'm not comfortable out in the sun trying to create something. I want everything within easy reach just where it belongs. ...

Old Taos Truck Single Yellow Rose ... |
Painting in Taos (6/12): I've been in Taos since Saturday afternoon. I started painting on Sunday. I've just started my eleventh watercolor. I'm not sure if 4 of them really count. They were done on Yupo - that new slick plastic paper. They are my first attempts at painting on Yupo. It did not take long to paint each of them. I'm listing four of my "real" paintings done on "real" watercolor paper. Tomorrow morning we are going up to Arroyo Seco to paint plein-air. |

Tom and Ray hanging it up after 35 years |
Headed to Taos (6/8): We went to two art openings last night. First to the Albuquerque museum for the members preview of "Art of Ancient Americas" then to the watercolor show at St Johns. This morning, I'm taking by bride to Cracker Barrel Restaurant and Old Country Store for breakfast before I head off to Taos. I plan to stop in Santa Fe to check out the newest exhibit at the Georgia O'Keeffe museum. Sad news this morning - that Click & Clack are going to end their "Car Talk" radio show on NPR. I have more than 100 of their shows on my i-pod. We enjoy listening to Tom and Ray as we drive across the country. We will miss them. Tom and Ray Magliozzi, hosts of National Public Radio's popular "Car Talk" program, will retire in September after decades of dispensing automotive repair and driving advice laced with a side of wicked humor. The pair, in their guise as the self-deprecating Click and Clack, the Tappett Brothers, have been taping the weekly show for WBUR, Boston's public radio affiliate, for 35 years, but say it is time to "stop and smell the cappuccino." Elder statesman Tom Magliozzi turns 75 this year. "My brother has always been 'work-averse,'" Ray Magliozzi, 63, said in a statement. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him." ...

Martin Heinrick |
Democratic Candidates for New Mexico (6/7): The primary election is over, the Democratic voters have decided - now is the time to put two good Democrats into the US House and Senate. The party has selected two fantastic selections in Michelle Luhan Grisham for Congress from Albuquerque an Martin Heinrick for the open Senate seat from New Mexico. California: I've never liked "crossover primaries" where republicans can vote in the democratic election and vice a versa - I don't want republicans deciding which member of "my" party gets selected. I don't want democrats messing with the republicans selections either. Now - California has gone even further: Under California’s new top-two primary system, a runoff will take place in November in all of the state’s congressional, Assembly and Senate districts. In some districts, the candidates will be from different political parties; in others, both candidates will be from the same party. Every one runs in a single primary and the top two candidates run in the general election. In California's system two democrats may be forced to run against each other in the general election ???? This is really stupid - I hope the experiment fails. ....

Jason in Europe (6/6): We will miss Jason in Taos in June, because this summer he's riding his bike across Europe. Below is a pic of him on Day 8 of the ride in Latvia. He stopped to have breakfast in the middle of nowhere. His facebook says they have only two more 90k rides until their first rest day in Riga. Jason's past rides have been in SE Asia and across Africa. Best of luck to Jason - Stay safe friend. |

Kaleidocycle Larger Version (6/2): Finished my large Kaleidocycle - it does not rotate very smoothly - I'll have to find a better paper stock rather than using 140 lb watercolor paper to build another one. I want to have a large working version before KAEA in Wichita. |

June - Means I'm Headed To Taos (6/1): If it's June, I'm packing for my trip to Taos to paint with friends. From Saturday June 9th through, Saturday June 16th I'll be at the Sagebrush Inn in Taos, New Mexico. Ken and Louise Blair are the best Inn Keepers in the world. They treat us like royalty while we are there. |
