Blue Trees (6/28):
This morning I put the finishing touches on my newest
watercolor "Blue Trees". I started it last Saturday at the NMWS
Paintout at Ray and Jan's house. Here it is matted. |

Keeping New Mexico Blue:
Thank's
to my friend Linda Ellison for telling me about this event at the home
of Fred Harris to raise funds for the Democratic Party of Sandoval
County. Two hundred good democrats plus beer and wine. Of course Jim
Hightower was the draw - he's the last true populist.

Painting This Morning (6/22):
This
morning, the NMWS is having a paintout at Ray and Jan's home. Our
Saturday paint group does not start up again till August - so I'm
joining the monthly NMWS Paintout this month.
Democratic Fund Raiser:
Later
in the afternoon, I'm headed to Corrales to hear (Texas Liberal) Jim
Hightower speak. The event is being held at the home of Senator Fred
Harris. I backed Harris years ago when he was running for the
Democratic Parties nomination for president. Looking at these "then and
now" photos I can easily tell that living in New Mexico has been good
for Fred.

Passports (6/20):
Our
passport are in the works now - but, we had to drive 25 miles to Cedar
Crest in the East mountains to do it. Two post office's in the
Albuquerque area would not even answer the phone - another one would
let us apply in a week, another in a month - Cedar Crest said: just
walk in, so we drove out there. We chose to not pay the extra $99 each
for more rapid service - the $270 to get two passports was stiff enough.

Dollar Movies (6/18):
The
juxtaposition of watching the movie "42" yesterday and hearing Obama
speak in Berlin today brought to mind the many positive changes that
have occurred over my 70 years on this fragile planet. I hope to be
around to see even greater strides over the next 30 years.
It's not often that the audience applauds a movie - but they did today
for "42" - As usual we waited for it to hit the Dollar Theater - Since
today was Tuesday we paid a total of $3.50 for two tickets. Wednesday,
it's still $1.00. We loved the movie.
In 1947, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he
signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League
Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and
Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and other players.
Facing blatant racism from every side, even his own team, Robinson was
forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting
in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's
hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the
talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his
critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

Ted Keller Demo (6/17):
Last
night's demo at the watercolor society meeting was a prime example of
what members gain best from joining the NMWS. If you were not at
tonight's meeting - then, you missed an inspiring demo by Ted Keller.
He did a portrait of Hemingway. He showed us his series of portraits of
dead artists before he started his demo. Makes one want to rush home
and paint.

Back From Painting In Taos (6/16):
I
have not posted to my blog in the last ten days because I've been busy
painting in Taos, New Mexico. I'm back home now trying to recover from
all the fun and fantastic food we had at the Sagebrush Inn. I'm posting
a couple of the ten watercolors I did last week in Taos.

Busy, Busy, Busy (6/5):
My
Chevy has been packed with art supplies for my week of painting in
Taos. Saturday morning I'll throw in my clothes and hit the road. It's
less that three hours to get there now - not the 800 mile drive from
Kansas City I use to make. Our oldest son and his new girl will fly
into Albuquerque on Thursday. My bride is bringing them up to Taos on
Friday for dinner and the art show we will all put on. I ran both cars
through the car wash and Frani has been cleaning up the house. She even
dead headed my roses so the back yard would look nice.

Cadillac Ranch (6/2):
On
the way back from Dallas, we stopped for a few minutes at Cadillac
Ranch, just west of Amarillo, Texas. There was even some sort of field
trip to let young children spray paint the Cadillacs. They came in a
yellow school bus. Each child was given plastic gloves and a choice of
colors of cans of spray paint. Perhaps, I'll get another painting out
of the photos I took.

WFWS-38 Dallas, Texas (6/1):
The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies 38th annual exhibition, hosted by SWS, was a real success.
Toni Seidel road with Frani and me to WFWS in Dallas. On the way back,
we spent a day exploring the Stockyards District in Fort Worth. We ate
at the famous Risky's BBQ. I had a delicious Brisket Sandwich plus
Pecan Pie toped off with Ice Cream. Risky's is now my second best
reason to visit Fort Worth. The first being Billy Bob's of course.
