Sunset Oct 30th |
Halloween (10/31): It's the end of October and we still have beautiful roses growing in the back yard. Our bowl of candy is ready for Trick-or-Treaters at the front door. We even had a fantastic New Mexico Sunset reflected against our mountain last night. I drive to Santa Fe for the New Mexico Art Teachers Conference early tomorrow morning - Life is good. |
Workshop Materials Ready (10/30): I did several test prints in my kitchen to see how my rock art lesson was working out. Now everything is loaded into my car to drive to Santa Fe on Friday morning. Like any good teacher - it's important to go through the same process they expect to have their students go through. I'm retired now and have plenty of time to test things out - do working teachers really have time to do this sort of preparation ? I also, put together a slide show of 20 beautiful rock art images with flute music by Carlos Nakai to help motivate the teachers in my workshop. |
Building Printing Plates (10/29): I'm creating sample Collagraph Printing Plates to use as examples in my workshop this weekend in Santa Fe. After I build the plate - I coat it with a thin coat of latex paint to seal the cardboard. This also allows the ink to release easier to the paper I'm printing on. |
Watching My Roses (10/28): I'm keeping an eye on my roses these last few days. We have not had a freeze yet - but the cold weather should be here soon. I'll have lots of photos to paint from over the winter. |
Sunday (10/27): I spent some of my time today working on my slides and handouts for my Collagraph Workshop that I'm doing in for art teachers in Santa Fe and San Diego. Too bad working art teachers don't have the luxury of time to develop fully in-depth lessons. Later today, I'm picking up my paintings from the NMWS Watercolor Society Spring Exhibition. |
October Roses: It's only 4 days before Halloween and I still have Roses. Soon the first freeze will come and they will be no more. I really enjoy having them so come Mid-February, I keed to cut them way back so we will have lots of beautiful flowers in the Spring. I took these photos today just before sunset. The red ones are the hardest rose to get a good photo of. |
Water Feature |
October Roses (10/26): I'm amazed that my roses are holding up so well this year. The temperatures have only dropped to around 40 each morning - so no real freeze yet. My bride has dug out two of my roses this month. One rose we wanted to remove because it was out of control - we will replace it before spring. The other rose was blocking the view of our water feature - It had to go. Now, I have to take the blue pot down and rebuild the water feature. |

Light Art (10/24): Art is part of the environment in Albuquerque - as it should be. This is a photo of the bike bridge over I-25. It's not my photo - even though I meant to stop and shoot pics but, of course never got around to it. It's great living in a city that understands the importance of public art. Here's a link to more public art in our city: http://www.flickr.com/photos/abqpublicart/ |
My WFWS Entries (10/23): I decided on the watercolors I'm entering into the WFWS juried exhibition in Arizona. My latest portrait of "Giselle" is one of my choices. Technically, I think it stands up - but, It's not the kind of unique painting that jurors look for. Oh-Well, the decision has been made. |
Iris Vasquez - Sculptor (10/21): One of the best reasons to be a docent at the Albuquerque Museum is for the great guest artists who present for us. Today, Iris Vasquez (sculptor) told us about her creative process. Her sculptures are presently on display at the museum in conjunction with the current African-American Art Exhibition. She is an artist (painting and sculpture) and a climber. |
4th of July Canyon (10/20): Next year we will go 2 or 3 weeks earlier to visit the 4th of July Canyon - Most of the leaves had already fallen - Still we enjoyed our day trip through the Monzano Mountains. |
Another Reject - I'll Keep On Trying (10/15): Today, I received another reject of my entries into the annual Kansas Watercolor Society (KWS). This is a major national watercolor exhibition hosted by the KWS each year in Wichita, Kansas. I'll just keep painting and enter again next year. For now, I need to finish my current watercolor and decide on my three entries into WFWS. Tomorrow, I've volunteered to teach how to photograph paintings for digital entries into these juried exhibitions. |
Early Morning Balloons (10/13): Today was the final day for this year's Balloon Fiesta. The weather was perfect and I got photos of several balloons as the sun was breaking over our mountain. Most of the balloons went east toward the Sandia but a few went over our house. Two balloons landed in the park behind our house. |
Young Girl (10/11): I'm starting on a new portrait this morning - I'll try to combine some of the things I learned in Ted Nuttall's workshop with my old methods as well. I'm working on a full sheet of Arches 300 lb Hot Press. |
Bisquits & Gravy Morning (10/10): This is what retirement is like in New Mexico - the balloons did not fly today - so, I watched them inflate on TV and on my computer. Bisquits and gravy is great on a cool morning. Today, my job is to frame two new prints by Amado Pena for my bride. Then, perhaps I'll straighten up my studio so I have room to paint - perhaps another day. |
Balloons Over Our House (10/09): We sat in our backyard to watch the balloons this morning. It's a extra benefit of living in Albuquerque. We have our roses, our mountain and balloons overhead. My bride even took a few photos with the camera on her i-pod touch. |
Balloon Fiesta (10/06): I got up at 4:30 am today so I could catch the Park & Ride Bus to the Balloon Fiesta Park this morning. The weather was perfect and I shot over 600 photos. |
Saturday Painters Opening (10/05): Our Saturday Painters Group held an opening, today, at the La Mesa Church. As usual, my beautiful bride made a wonderful treat for the opening reception. It was her famous Southwest Cheesecake. It's meant to be served as a spread on crackers or chips. You can find her recipe on my website at http://www.taospaint.com/Frans/SWcheesecake.html |
NMWS Fall Opening (10/04): We had a very successful opening for the NMWS Fall Exhibition. Sixteen artists received awards at the awards ceremony. Best of show went to Marlene Bachicha-Roberts for her painting "Sacred Rocks, La Push". First place went to Lawrence Chvotzkin for "Floral Embroidery". |
New Portraits (10/03): I did one new portrait each day in Ted Nuttall's workshop. I did the girl with the pigtails the first day. She was a model at MasterWorks open house this last spring. The next day I did a larger full sheet watercolor of my grand daughter Tiffanie with her camera. The third day I did a portrait of our exhibitions chair Trish. She's the young lady with the glasses and purple hair. On the last day I tried a portrait of Gene. He's a friend from Oklahoma who comes to Taos each June to paint. I didn't have time to finish it - perhaps later. Each of my paintings are 1/2 sheets of Arches Hot Press except for the one of Tiffanie - it's on a full sheet. |
Ted Nuttall's Workshop (10/02): After yesterday's demo at the NMWS meeting, I knew Ted Nuttall was a great teacher. |
Cool October (10/01): I did three new drawings for Ted Nuttall's workshop that starts Today. Two are 1/2 sheets, the last one of Tiffanie is on a full sheet. They are all on 300 lb Arches Hot Press. I'm taking an easel to the workshop so I can learn to paint on a vertical surface. |
You Are Invited to 3 Exhibitions - Oct 4, 5 & 6 (10/02): You are invited to three opening receptions for watercolor shows in early October. I have two watercolors in the NMWS Fall Exhibition which opens Friday, October 4th in the Fine Arts Gallery at Expo New Mexico. I'll also have one painting on display along with other artists from the "Saturday Painters Group" at the La Mesa Presbyterian Church. The opening is from 2 to 4 on Saturday, October 5th. Then on Sunday, October 6th - the Mississippi Grand National has an opening reception from 2 to 4. The exhibition is in the Mississippi Art Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. This is the 5th year in a row that I've been selected for the juried show in Mississippi. |
