Starting A New Rose (9/26):
This morning, with my Friday friends, I started a new
watercolor of a rose. I'm glad I took a lot of photos of my roses this
summer. They seem to be almost done for the season. Perhaps they will
spring back. We don't get our first frost for another 5 or 6 weeks. |

Blossom's New Haircut (9/24):
Great
day today - my bride got her sewing maching back. Life is always better
(for me) when she keeps really busy. Also today, Blossom went to the
doggie beauty shop and came home happy. She likes to lay on the patio
and watch me cook pork chops on the grill. Of course she expectes to
get a bone.

Jean Hyland Demo (9/21):
Yesterday,
after painting with my Saturday Friends, I drove to Santa Fe. I
attended Jeanne Hyland's demo on her "Wet & Workable" method of
doing watercolor. She saturates 140 lb paper and keeps it wet for
hours. Jean bursts many myths about watercolor—using a unique and
un-intimidating approach to painting. She starts with loose color
washes, then blocks in large shapes and values with thicker paint. Jean
keeps the painting “workable” for hours to lift, sculpt, glaze or layer
and achieve a rich, painterly character. Her method can be used for
many subjects. It works great for dry climates like Mew Mexico.
Jean is also teaching at the
Artists’ Materials Expo 2014
at Buffalo Thunder North of Santa Fe

Step by Step (9/13):
Here's by newest watercolor - step by step. I'm working from photos I took before we boarded the ship out of San
Francisco last September. My bride and I spent a quiet morning in
Sausalito just the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito is a
delightful community, right on the water, with an elevation of 13 feet.
After we ate breakfast watching the water, we walked around shopping. I
photographed this older couple crossing the street in Sausalito.

Nine-Eleven (9/11):
I
very intentionally turned off the news today. I did not want to watch
the replay of planes flying into buildings. Instead, I took more photos
of my roses and worked on the spreadsheet for our October watercolor
show. When the disaster happened, I was teaching in Kansas City, our middle school put
it on the TV in our classrooms. The next day I had my students develop
a display of words that expressed things that were important in their
lives. Our theme was "it is better to light one little candle than to
curse the darkness". We put the work up in the display cases in the
hallways.

Portraits Accepted (9/3):
I just received word that I had two paintings accepted
into the New Mexico Art Leagues "Face the Muse (Music) juried portrait
exhibition. It runs October 11th through through October 31st.
The
portrait is of Allison Krauss - I worked from photos I took at a
concert back in July at Starlight Theater in Kansas City. Her group is
called "Union Station". The other painting shows two of the four
musicians who make up the group. The gentelmen in the painting are part
of "Alison Krauss and Union Station". On the guitar is Daniel John
"Dan" Tyminski, he is best known for his updated version of the song
"Man of Constant Sorrow," which was featured in the movie O Brother,
Where Art Thou? "Dan" Tyminski was the singing voice for George Clooney
in that movie. On Bass, is Barry Turner Bales from Kingsport,
Tennessee. Barry is the long time bass player and harmony vocalist for
Alison Krauss and Union Station. He has been in the band for around 25
years.
