Orange Roses Finished (1/31):
It took me awhile - but, I finally finished my newest watercolor of "Orange Roses". I took photos at various stages of the paintings development. I don't have any plans to enter it in any juried shows. For the NMWS Spring "Members Only" Exhibition - I'm simply going to enter my three paintings that were not accepted into WFWS. Right now - my next objective is to start on my income tax returns so I can file them quickly this year.

Museum Changes (1/26):
Docents at the Albuquerque Museum got a sneak peak today at the new history exhibit - titled "Only in Albuquerque" - the exhibit is filled with lots of fantastic artifacts to help tell the story of this wonderful place we live. Of special interest was the map of our city on the floor - it's an interactive map - if you point your i-phone at spots on the map details about that spot come up using a special app on your phone. The new history exhibit space is scheduled to open to the public on March 3rd.
Only in Albuquerque features a greatly expanded story of our city from before written history to the present, set in an engaging, fun, and interactive atmosphere. Our story is told through four galleries: Spirited, Courageous, Resourceful and Innovative, all connecting to a central gallery entitled Our Land. This ingenious design provides our guests with a physical layout that reinforces the central theme: different cultures, interacting with each other in a unique geographic setting, have developed shared characteristics found only in Albuquerque and the middle Río Grande Valley. Hundreds of our city’s most beloved artifacts are featured, with additional objects recently acquired yet to be unveiled.
“Only in Albuquerque” will highlight these distinctions through artifacts, interactive exhibits and a tell-your-own-story video booth. The $8.3 million project opens at the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History in March. “It would be easy to say we’re just like other sunbelt cities,” said museum curator of history Deborah Slaney. “But we’re actually so different.” The layout resembles a wagon wheel with individual spokes declaring themes. Visitors will walk into a round central gallery of “Our Land” beneath a circle of turquoise sky. As guests stand above a sweeping floor map of the valley, a smartphone picks up hot spots producing photographs, maps and videos. Enter “Route 66" to learn Albuquerque is the only city in the United States where the fabled road crosses itself twice (at the corner of Fourth Street and Central Avenue).

President Obama in Lawrence (1/22):
Before speaking on the KU campus on Thursday morning, President Barack Obama met with Kansas coach Bill Self and the KU basketball team.
Obama, who began his remarks with a quick “Rock Chalk,” told the gathered crowd at the Anschutz Sports Pavilion that he began his brief trip to campus with a meeting with the players, who then arrived inside the pavilion to hear the speech.
Obama, a dedicated basketball fan, is the brother-in-law of former Oregon State coach Craig Robinson and annually fills out an NCAA Tournament bracket. Obama then poked fun at his performance in Kansas during two presidential elections by mentioning Kansas’ record streak of 10 straight Big 12 championships.
“Coach Self won 10 straight,” Obama said. “I lost two straight here.” Obama mentioned the team in his speech. “I’ve got to admit, I took a moment to meet with coach Self and the KU basketball team,” Obama said. “I mean, we’re here for other business, but while I was here I thought I should talk to some basketball players. And it is January, so that means the Jayhawks are at the top of the Big 12, hunting for 11 straight conference titles.”

Blue Bottles (1/21):
Below are the three original watercolors I'm donating for the RAEA auction at NAEA in New Orleans. RAEA (Retired Art Education Association) - the auction raises funds to provide awards for an outstanding Student Art Education group - and, YES - I drank all the wine from the blue bottles. Each is an original watercolor - matted to fit a standard 20 x 16 inch frame. I did these watercolors last Spring in Robin Lee Makowski's workshop.

Another Artist (1/18):

Our grand daughter Erica posted a photo of our youngest grandson Max on Facebook. It looks like we will have another artist in the family. And, look at the beautiful head of curls.

My Memory ??? (1/17):
Can I blame it on old age ? This morning I went to a NM Art Teachers meeting that is not for another week. Earlier this week I missed a MasterWorks of NM meeting that I thought was next week. At least I went to Kinko's this morning and enlarged cross stitch patterns for my bride. I've got to keep my commitments to her or she won't braid my hair every morning.
At least I did get a new painting started. It's of two orange roses from our back yard this summer. I also learned that I did not get a painting accepted into the Western Fed show (as usual). Now, I can enter the paintings that were not accepted into the NMWS Spring show.

Painting Back From Kansas (1/14):

This morning, my painting "Young Brave" came back from the Kansas Watercolor Society show in Wichita.

Public Art (1/13):

Monday, Docents got a introductory tour of a new display about Public Art around our community. Here is another excellent reason to visit the Albuquerque Museum. Go to: http://www.cabq.gov/…/public-ar…/interactive-public-art-map/ for an interactive map of public art in Albuquerque.

Art in the School volunteers were in training this morning - the guest speaker was Mary Sweet (Printmaker) the volunteers will be working with elementary students in Albuquerque schools.

MasterWorks Entries (1/11):
This morning, I submitted three new watercolors to this years MasterWorks of New Mexico. The one titled "North Shore" is from our cruise to Hawaii. The "California Couple" was from a morning we spent in Sausalito, California before our cruise last year to Alaska. The painting titled "Moon Over Sandia" was based on photos I took of the moon rising, at sunset, from our backyard earlier this month.

Watercolor Demo (1/10):

Saturday morning, David Chavez did a demo for NMWS about how he does watercolor on linen - Sorry if you missed it.

"Je Suis Charlie" (3/8):
Online, the declaration "Je Suis Charlie," or "I Am Charlie," replaced profile pictures on Facebook while Twitter users showed themselves with the slogan on signs with words of support for the 12 victims who were killed at Charlie Hebdo, a weekly newspaper that had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad. The "Je Suis Charlie" slogan has grown into a trending hashtag on Twitter and spread to Instagram, along with an image of a machine gun with the words "Ceci n'est pas une religion," or "This is not a religion." Two of my favorie cartoons that have been published are shown below. No one should have to die for what they draw or what they think.

NAEA In March (1/6):
Yesterday, I registered my bride and I for the NAEA Conference in New Orleans in late March. Every year art teachers from all over the country show up for a fantastic national conference. This year it's in a city we love - New Orleans. The NAEA is at the Hilton - but, we prefer the older hotels with more character.

Visualizing Albuquerque (1/5):
Docent training began today about “Visualizing Albuquerque” January 31 – May 10, 2015
The exhibition is part of On the Map: Unfolding Albuquerque Art + Design which is a city-wide cultural partnership that celebrates the art of central New Mexico. At the heart of this collaboration, the Albuquerque Museum’s exhibition titled Visualizing Albuquerque, curated by Joseph Traugott, will investigate the unique history and present of central New Mexico art and serve as an umbrella for institutional partners. Traugott says, ”Albuquerque artists found their own artistic voice after World War II and transformed a western boom town into a thriving art center. This exhibition demonstrates how an influx of modern-minded Californians moved to Albuquerque and changed the city by unleashing the creativity of local artists. The resulting abstract works broke with traditional New Mexico scenes. By including women and their concerns, ethnic perspectives, popular culture subjects, and political content after 1980, Albuquerque artists synthesized an aesthetic that shunned commercial trends. Visualizing Albuquerque revels in the region’s diverse artists and reveals how their distinctive fusions have bridged aesthetic divides and cultural rifts.”

This exhibition begins with items from the regions very ancient past, “Folsom Points” through Spanish and US entry into New Mexico including the influence of the Atomic Bomb. This exhibition will also showcase the amazing amount of modern contemporary artists that were located here in Albuquerque.
