Royal Street Duo (7/31): I finally got back to painting this morning - I made a bit of progress on "Royal Street Duo". If this one works out it will be one of my entries into the Weatern Federation show in Colorado. |
Another Painting to Mississippi (7/30): I learned today that my watercolor "Street Music" was accepted into the 30th Mississippi Watercolor Society Grand National in Jackson, Mississippi Paul Jackson was the Juror. The exhibition dates are October 5th - November 22nd, 2015 - This is my 6th year in a row being accepted into the MSWS Grand National - we hope to view the show on our way to New Orleans later this year. |

Wildlife From Our Trip (7/27): |
Friday (7/24): Dinner tonight made Tess cry. When we got back from our trip we wanted to treat our grand daughters to hamburgers. Our grand daughter Tess just had to have a Diablo Burger from Carl's Jr - The idea for a new burger topped with sliced jalapenos, jalapeno poppers, spicy habanero bacon sauce and pepperjack cheese was dreamed up not in the test kitchens of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s but by the fast-food chains’ advertising agency. |
Thursday (7/23): After breakfast at Jacob's lake, we head to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. With an average elevation of 8,000 feet, the North Rim offers views of the canyon from a higher vantage, in an environment and sub-alpine climate of blue spruce, Douglas fir, mountain ash, colorful lupines and grassland meadows. Look for Kaibab squirrels, goshawks, porcupines, mule deer and elk. |
Wednesday (7/22): Today is our day to hike to the bottom of Bryce Canyon. There is no place quite like Bryce Canyon. Hoodoos (odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from the forces of erosion) can be found on every continent, but here is the archetypal "hoodoo-iferous" terrain. Descriptions fail. Cave without a roof? Forest of stone? Even photographs strain credulity. When you visit maybe you'll come up with a better name. In the meantime "Bryce" will have to suffice. |
Tuesday (7/21): Spending two nights in Kanab, Utah - first we are off to explore Zion. We followed the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present day adventures. |

Killer Heels and Jazz (7/18): We took in a Jazz Concert and the Killer Heels exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History this was a real photo op for visitors - that's our daughter-in-law Shari Bowman-Duncan shooting pics of the heels. |
Tent Rocks (7/17): We took our beautiful grand daughters to Tent Rocks - it was a wonderful day to climb. |
Sunday Morning Balloons (7/12): A cool morning in Albuquerque is a great time to fly hot air balloons. I caught a few pics as they flew over our backyard this morning. |
Royal Street Duo (7/10): I got a decent start on my newest watercolor this morning. I going to take my time so that "Royal Street Duo" turns out right. I also ordered a couple of CD's with Tanya & Dorise's music on them. Then I'll be able to listen while I paint. |
Retired Art Teachers (7/8): Retired art teachers put out an e-bulletin to all retired art teachers who are members of NAEA - I'm attaching a link to the most recent issue here - do check it out. If there are art teachers out there who are looking toward retirement they need to stay active and involved. RAEA is a way to stay involved. |
USA Soccer (7/7): Fantastic Win yesterday for US Women's Soccer 5-2 over Japan. Lloyd scored her hat trick as the clock ticked 15 minutes, hitting the goal of the tournament, and also setting a World Cup record for fastest hat trick. I enjoy watching women's soccer because the ladies work so much harder than the men do. |
Woman in Gold: Today, we are headed to the Dollar Show ($1.15 now) to see "Woman in Gold". The film “Woman in Gold,” starring Helen Mirren as the indefatigable Maria Altmann, acknowledges in a brief written prologue before the credits roll, more than 100,000 stolen works of art are still unaccounted for. There are many reasons that among the hundreds of thousands of cases involving artwork looted by the Nazis the story of Gustav Klimt’s “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” would particularly appeal to filmmakers. For one, there is the mesmerizing gold-flecked painting itself, which set a record price of $135 million when it was sold in 2006. Then there is the David-and-Goliath tale featuring a feisty octogenarian heroine — Ms. Bloch-Bauer’s niece Maria Altmann — taking on a recalcitrant Austrian government. And finally there is the satisfying conclusion. Ms. Altmann gets the portrait back. Justice prevails. |
Roses in the Summer Heat (7/6): Some of my roses are holding up really well in the summer heat. It's nice to have a touch of color in the yard. |
A Place to Paint (7/5): I finally cleaned up my studio - now I have a place to paint. I had better keep it that way - there are lots of shows coming soon. |
Safe 4th of July (7/4): We stayed home today and I grilled chill dogs for dinner. I framed two of my New Orleans watercolors that I painted when I was in Taos last month. I also cut a few roses, from our back yard, for my beautiful bride. |
Progress (7/3): I made some progress this morning, in Friday Painters, on my newest watercolor of "Three Mudders".
My cactus has been very late developing this year - today it just put out it's first blooms ...
New Entries (7/2): I just entered two watercolors into the Mississippi Grand National - I always have luck in the Mississippi Watercolor Society I've been accepted five years in a row so far. Both of these paintings have been rejected by other shows but, I think they are worthy of getting in. |
Welcome to July (7/1): Sad news - my entries to the exibition in Overland Park, Kansas were "not invited", which is a kind way to say "rejected". Which means that now I don't have to ship the paintings to Kansas. I had hoped that Nate and Maggie could see the one of Nate holding their beautiful daughter. Now I'll continue to clean up my mess, in my studio, so I'll have room to paint at home. |
