After about 30 years, I'm getting the curl back in my moustache and some soul back into my paintings. ... |

Dinner with Retired Art Teachers and Our Guests in Chicago (3/27): |
Watercolors in New Mexico Shows (3/25): The Jurors decisions are in from three different exhibitions in New Mexico. I now will have five of my musician watercolors on display around the state.
NMWS "Southern Chapter"
Show
MasterWorks of New Mexico
My Watercolors (3/23): The results came back from our juror yesterday. I will have two paintings in the NMWS Spring Exhibition. I framed them today - so, they are ready for the show. |
While In Chicago (3/21): While the art teachers were in Chicago - there was also a "nerd" convention going on at the same time. It was billed as a "Comic Exhibition" - I got lots of pics of the nerd types in their costumes while they were coming and going. I just did not want to pay $50 to go in the the exhibits. |
My Workshop in Chicago (3/19): This year I did my "Tearing Mountains" watercolor collage workshop at NAEA. It went extreamly well and everyone seamed to get a lot out of it. I gave every participant a CD with step-by-step powerpoints of the process. |
Back From Chicago (3/18): It was a fast three days - flying to Chicago for this year's NAEA Convention. As President -Elect of RAEA (Retired Art Teachers) I had planned to learn, this first year, by observation. But with our President, Linda Willis Fisher, was called away for an emergency - so, I had to fill in. Dean Johns, Past-President of RAEA, and I shared the chore of keeing everything on track. RAEA selected James Madison University to receive the 2016 Outstanding Student Chapter Award. We also presented Elizabeth Burkhauser the award as our Emeritus Art Educator for 2016. Later, RAEA members had a delightful dinner at "Blackie's". Laura Paige and Karin Tollefson-Hall from James Madison University plus Elizabeth Burkhauser were our guests at Blackie's. |
First Night in Chicago (317): It was Saint Patrick's Day so we had a party at the Hilton - there was lots of green of course. The art teachers held their annual "suit case sale" in a giant ballroom. Of course the RAEA also had tables set up for our auction of hand made art. I donated two watercolors and they both sold. The money the retired teachers raise goes into our award programs. |
Planning Ahead (3/16): My friend Sandy is in Mexico right now taking a fantastic watercolor workshop from Thomas Schaller. I do envy her - but, I've decided to wait until next spring when Thomas Schaller will be the juror for the NMWS Spring "Members Only" Show. I'll be one of the first to sign up for his workshop here in Albuquerque. The Thomas Schaller Workshop for NMWS will be May 2-5, 2017. The New Mexico Watercolor Society host many great workshops by well known artists right here in Albuquerque. We don't have to travel, pay for a hotel and we can brown bag our lunch. What a fantastic deal. Check out his work at http://thomasschaller.com |
Going to Chicago (3/15): NAEA News has a brand new look - slick and glossy - no more newsprint. I arrived in the mail yesterday with my copy of Art Education. These are publications of the National Art Education Association of which I'm a proud member. This years NAEA convention is in Chicago - my first NAEA convention was back in 1976 in Saint Louis. This was me back then - I was quite a bit thinner back then. |
New Business Cards (3/10): I decided to go vertical with my new cards. |
Calligraphy (3/8): Because of a Trappist monk, Apple computer displays look the way they do today. Steve Jobs sat in on a calligraphy class in the early 70's. The monk was the Rev. Robert Palladino, who died on Feb. 26 at 83. A Roman Catholic priest who began his vocation in a monastic order, Father Palladino was also a world-renowned master of calligraphy. “Priest and calligrapher,” his business card read, in his unimpeachable Renaissance italic, and he long plied both trades at once. For years, babies he baptized received baptismal certificates in his flawless hand. |
...
Watercolor Demo (3/5): Dan Stouffer did this month's demo for the NMWS March meeting at the Albuquerque meeting. I'm so glad we decided to do Saturday morning meetings - that way more members get to see our great demos. |
Jayhawk Myth in Bronze & Snow (3/2): In Lawrence, Kansas, in front of Strong Hall on the University of Kansas campus, there sits a 600-pound bronze sculpture that has been displayed on campus since 1958 and has been in its current location since 1975. This bronze, created by sculptor Elden Tefft, is ostensibly of that mythical flying creature (and KU mascot), the Jayhawk. The Myth: If ever a virgin shall graduate from the University of Kansas, the Great Bronze Jayhawk shall acquire the power of flight, and within a week shall leave its perch to wreak havoc on all states other than Kansas (where havoc is not to be tolerated). |
Rolling Over (Not-Invited) Watercolors (3/1): My four entries into Art at the Center were rejected by the juror in Overland Park. So, I decided to roll over two of them into Watercolor USA in Springfield, Missouri. |
My Workshop at NAEA in Chicago: The 1st photo shows a 4th grader in Kansas painting my "Tearing Mountains" Lesson. The 2nd photo shows a mid school student from Taos doing the same lesson. I'm Looking forward to sharing this very successful lesson with other art teachers at NAEA in Chicago in March. I'm getting my materials together already. I hope to fit everything into the two bags Southwest allows me to take on the flight. Presenting in Chicago March 2016 Saturday -- 03/19/2016 12:00 PM - 03/19/2016 01:50 PM Instructional Practice Hands-on Studio Workshop (Ticketed/2 hours): Elementary, Middle Level, Secondary McCormick Place/Lakeside Center/E257/Level 2 Tearing Mountains / Watercolor Collage Explore the magic of watercolor combined with a torn paper collage. This is a very successful approach to teaching watercolor to students from fourth grade through high school. Take home a finished masterpiece, a full lesson plan with examples, and a new appreciation for watercolor. PRESENTER: Woody Duncan |
