Our Mountain From Our Backyard ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... |
Our Mountain 10/30: This morning, on Facebook, I posted pics of a balloon floating over "our mountain". I got a reply from one of my students - "You have a mountain ? I knew I should've payed more attention in art class at Rosedale." |
New Paintings 10/29: I did a new watercolor, "Orange Roses", in our Saturday morning painters group today. It's almost finished - I need to add some darks within the roses. When I got home, I found time to frame two new watercolors. Of course, I took older watercolors out of their frames to make room for the newer paintings. |
I
just got a very kind complement from a former student - "You have many
teachers in your life....and there are always just those couple that
you always remember and stick with you because you actually learned
something from them and they were great at what they did....you , for
me , were one of those...so thank you."

A Morning Walk Through Albuquerque's Bosque 10/27: I let my bride sleep in this morning and went for a walk through the Bosque. Of course, I took my camera with me. I need to get out early more mornings checking out material for my watercolors and to just enjoy the world around me. I often say that "the best thing about living in Albuquerque is that it is surrounded by New Mexico. |
Framed New Paintings 10/26: I didn't get much painting done this morning - but, I did find time to frame two new watercolors. Perhaps I should enter these into Louisiana ? |
High School Students 10/25: Today our docent team had a tour of High School students from Valcano Vista High School. Along with seeing New Mexico art they were exposed to the Pueblo Revolts of both 1680 and 2180 promoted by the creations by Virgil Ortiz. http://www.virgilortiz.com/virgil-ortiz-never-stop/ I suggested that they might check out Star Trek Next Generation (star trek the next generation - season 7 episode 20 - journey's end) which references the 1680 Revolt in New Mexico. |
Progress On "Mr Democrat" 10/24: I've made a bit of progress on my portrait of Fred Harris. |
Finished Jazz Portrait 10/22: I
finished my watercolor "Jazz Singer" this morning. I think it's the
best portrait I've done yet of Doreen Ketchens. She has a Facebook page
at https://www.facebook.com/DoreensJazzNewOrleans?fref=ts&ref=br_tf
New Watercolors 10/21: It was a good day today - I made progress on my three new watercolors this morning. I might be able to finish two of them tomorrow - the "Jazz Singer" and "NOLA Clarinet". I did get a small start on "Mr Democrat" - my portrait of Fred Harris. |
Mr Democrat 10/20: This morning I started on a portrait of Fred Harris "Mr Democrat". Fred now lives nearby in the village of Corrales, New Mexico. He is on the faculty at UNM. I supported him in his bid of the Democratic nomination for president in 1976. Harris ran for president on a campaign for "economic democracy."in 1976. To keep expenses down, he traveled the country in an RV and stayed in private homes, giving his hosts a card which was to be redeemable for one night's stay in the White House upon his election. He placed emphasis on issues affecting Native Americans and the working class. His interest in Native American rights is linked to his ancestry and that of his former wife, La Donna Harris Comanche who had been deeply involved in Native American activism in her own right. Moreover, he was from the state which had begun its political existence as Indian Territory. Harris served as US Senator from Oklahoma and as national chairman of the Democratic Party. |
Florence Foster Jenkins 10/17: We needed a good laugh - and got it. We took in "Florence Foster Jenkins" at the dollar show today. In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he's facing his greatest challenge yet. |
Playing With Photoshop 10/16: I ordered a newer version of Photoshop Elements (#14) because my older version (#9) would freeze up on me way too often. So, now I'm playing with my newest toy. I made about a dozen different version of the roses that I cut for my bride this morning. I found a new feature that converts into a photo a comic. That's my beautiful bride with me on our most recent cruise. |

Workshop in Santa Fe 10/14: November 4th, from 1:00 - 2:45, I'm conducting a hands-on "Soft Sculpture" workshop for New Mexico art teachers. It's for the NMAEA annual fall conference in Santa Fe. |
Ideas For New Watercolors 10/13: These are photo studies for my next two watercolors - I believe the one of the jazz singer will make a better painting of Doreen Ketchens than my earlier version - it's cropped closer and the angle of the face shows a lot more expression. The Clarinet player is also from our trip to New Orleans. There are lots of wonderful resources on Royal Street in the French Quarter. |
Triplets Turn 18 10/12: It's hard to believe that our grands are now eighteen years old. I remember pinning up photos on them in my classroom back at Rosedale when they were born. It's fantastic that they are each a unique individual. |
Two New Watercolors 10/11: My two newest watercolors could not be more different from each other. I finished both my "Pink Roses" and my "Balloon Shadows" yesterday. The roses are on 300 lb Arches Rough. The balloons are on 300 lb Arches Hot Press. Both are painted on the backs of paintings I discarded a few years ago. It's a little known fact that watercolor paper has two sides. |

Last Day 10/9: Today was the final day of this year's Balloon Fiesta. I got a few good photos as they came over our neighborhood. Now I can get bust and get something else done besides editing photos of balloons. |
Pink Roses 10/8: I made progress on my new watercolor "Pink Roses" today and got several comments on what to do and what "not" to do to the painting next. |
Watercolors Started 10:7: I got a good start this morning on my two newest watercolors - "Pink Roses" and "Balloon Shadows". |
Roses & Balloons 10/5: I'm starting two new watercolors today - Roses & Balloons - I'm going to try loosening up and painting softer. |
Value Study 10/4: Artists should do value studies in black & white before starting a painting. I'm taking the easy way by using photoshop to play with my photographs. These are three ideas I'm working on for new watercolors. I took the shots of hotair balloons on Saturday at the Mass Ascension. The roses are from my back yard. |
Over Our House 10/2: My bride and I stayed home this Sunday to enjoy the balloons floating over our house. I took over 500 photos at the mass assension yesterday. Today I took another 500 from our own back yard. What a wonderful place to live. It was a unknown bonus when we bought this lot. My friend Debbie said we built right on he landing spot - Sorry, Debbie. |
Balloon Fiesta 10/1: I took our watercolor exhibition juror, Frank Eber, to the mass assencion this morning. He had been teaching a watercolor workshop all week at the Fine Arts Gallery at Expo New Mexico. It would have been a shame to be here this weekend and not experience our Balloon Fiesta. We caught the park and ride buss at 5:30 am - or at least we got in line to catch the bus at that early hour. We were on the field with the balloons well before 7:00 am. |
Still Together After Fifty-Three Years: Frani and I were married over 53 years ago. I met my beautiful bride, our senior year, in High School. It's great to be married to your best friend and such a wonderful traveling companion. Frani shot that pic of me when we were in New Orleans. I took the photo of her in Colorado Springs. The fireworks are from the Isotopes baseball game we attended at the end of this season. Click on the Photo Above for a Movie ... |
