November 14 - Fresco: Wednesday night I attended a fund raiser for Albuquerque's new fresco. I got a good look at our cities newest art project. Artist Frederico Vigil is working on a 2,500 square foot fresco. He said it took months just to layer the walls before drawing over it with the same pigment used in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. "We're at the sinopia stage now, which means we're getting the design on the wall with the color," said Vigil. The fresco is tucked away in a stairwell at the convention center. Vigil said a stairwell is a unique place to showcase art. Last nights event was a fund raiser to help pay the apprentices helping the artist Frederico Vigil on this four year effort. I visited with some of the young apprentices before the event got under way. |

November 13 - Visions Tour: Tuesday was my first peak at Visions of the Hispanic World: Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library at the Albuquerque Museum. I need to go back and study the large impressive exhibition because we should have several tours. |

November 11 - Retired Art Teachers: At the annual NAEA National Convention in Boston, on March 14 - 16, 2019, Retired Art Educators, RAEA, will again have our Silent Art Auction of original art works made and donated by our RAEA and NAEA members. The auction will take place on Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 7–9 p.m. at the Artisans Gallery in the Convention Hotel in Boston. I am writing to you requesting donations of your original artwork to our Silent Auction fund-raiser. This is another opportunity for you to showcase your original artwork and to help a worthy cause! As you may know, RAEA receives no funding from NAEA so this, our only fund-raiser, is essential to the continuance of our organization and its endeavors. All proceeds support the RAEA Awards Program. Many of you have donated in the past. I thank you and hope you will donate again this year and in the future. If you are attending the Boston Convention and are bringing donation(s) and the required paperwork with you, contact me on your arrival. (913-963-1472) You may reach me at my cell phone number that is listed above. Your work may also be turned in at the RAEA Table in the NAEA Registration Area BEFORE 3:00 pm March 14, 2019. If you are not attending the convention or are not arriving in time on March 14, the donation(s) need to be shipped to Woody Duncan 7236 Calle Montana NE, Albuquerque, NM 87113 Before Saturday March 9, 2019. Each donation must be accompanied by: • Two (2) completed copies of the RAEA Auction Forms: Available to be downloaded at: https://www.taospaint.com/RAEA2019BidForm.pdf Or - I can e-mail the forms to you Fill in the information about the artist and the artwork in the left column and please be sure to provide a minimum bid keeping in mind that this is a fundraiser and price accordingly. Completing these forms
ahead of time is a must, as we will have no "lead" time to fill out
and/or duplicate the paperwork at the convention. PLEASE let me know
the number of pieces you will be donating using the contact information
below.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you for your support! Sincerely, Woody Duncan 913-963-1472 woodyduncan@comcast.net ... |

November 10 - Saturday Painters Group: This morning I made some progress on my newest watercolor "Bird Girl". Afterwards, we all went out to lunch since we will not get together again till February. Later, in the afternoon we attended an art opening in Los Lunas, New Mexico. |
||||
November 9 - My Watercolors: This morning, I finished one small painting "Malaga Music" and got a small start on "Bird Girl". Tomorrow, I hope to make some progress - but, it's also the last day for our Saturday group. We all plan to go out to lunch together since it's our final day. Then I'll head to Los Lunas for the opening of an exhibition there. |
||||
November 8 - Painting Again: Starting my first watercolor from our cruise - I saw this young lady in a park in Auckland. I did ask her father if I could take photos. |
||||
November 7 - Democratic Wave Election: In New Mexico - every state wide office went blue - and only the 2nd congressional district appears to remain Republican (but at least a woman will be the winner there). Now in Washington the Democrats will have a sizable majority in the house. I hope they are smart enough to - Investigate YES - But don't waste valuable time on trying to impeach Trump - The votes are not in the senate - Instead, develop some good legislation on infrastructure, immigration, health care, etc. - even if the ideas are not enacted - it paves the way for real meaningful change in 2020. First Native American women elected to Congress: Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland
Democrats Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland will become the first Native American women elected to Congress, CNN has projected.
In New Mexico, Haaland will replace Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan
Grisham, who vacated the seat to run for governor, and Davids will
unseat Kansas GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder.
Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Haaland is an enrolled
member of the Pueblo of Laguna, according to their respective campaigns. The victories for the two Native American women mark a milestone in the US political system.
Davids identifies as a lesbian, making her the first openly LGBT member
of Congress from Kansas. She will enter Congress as a lawyer and a
former mixed martial arts fighter.
Haaland won her district's primary in June, which put her in position
to take the general election against Republican congressional nominee
Janice Arnold-Jones. CNN rated the district "solid Democrat." CNN rated the seat that Davis is set to win as "lean Democrat."

November 6 - Second Graders: Our team of docents took 2nd graders through the Albuquerque Museum this morning - it's good to be back and doing something I love. |
||||
November 5 - Twists & Turns: Things just happen - I had to leave my car at Embsasy Suites on Saturday night after the Art teachers conference. It would not start - so I took a cab home. I love my Chevy with all those bells and whistles - but one would think they could add a feature to tell you that your battery was low - even my phone tells me that. So, Monday morning I rented a car and life goes on. I've got my Chevy back now - so life is good but my bank account is drained. Whe I was young you just went to Western Auto, bought a battery for $49 and changed it yourself - but not these days. But, it's best that I don't work on my on car - I'll stick to painting pictures and never pop the hood on my car. Being home is good - relax in the hot tub at night - eat ice cream and watch the election results. We are political junkies - and that will be our entertainment on Tuesday night. |
||||
November 4 - My Bride's Talents: We dropped off my brides beautiful cross stitch to be stretched so I can frame it. It took her about 1 1/2 years - it's a real labor of love. |
||||
November 3 - New Mexico Art Teachers At Play: This weekend, in Albuquerque, 200 New Mexico art teachers attended the NMAEA Fall Conference. It's great to see so many art teachers out there expanding their knowledge and skills. |
||||
November 2 - We Voted: We voted early - straight Democrat of course. I need to stop and buy popcorn for the election watch Tuesday night. I even have my fingers crossed for the voters in Kansas - perhaps a Democrat as governor and two seats in congress. Is that too much to hope for ? This is the year for women to win. If both Deb Haaland and Shrice Davids win there will be two Native-American women in Congress. |
||||
November 1 - Back Home Again: We just recently returned from a 28 day cruise, on the Golden Princess, from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia. We spent 3 days in Sydney (not long enough) then a 13+ hour flight back to LAX (too long). |
||||
Watercolors on Display: I have my best watercolor on display in Wichita for the Kansas Watercolor Society National show. I also will have three watercolors on display in Los Lunas, NM. The opening is next Saturday and the exhibition runs through January 26th. |
