January 30 - Judging Student Art: Today, along with Brian, (an APS art teacher) - the two of us selected 35 student watercolors for this years Metro Art show. We get together again on February 20th to choose the award winners. I had dropped my bride off at Dillards to shop and she took me out for a Chinese dinner - that makes for a well rounded day. |
January 29 - 3rd Graders: Our Docent team guided a delightful group of 3rd graders through the new Spanish Art exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum this morning. We concentrated on portraits because the students drew portraits as their art activity at the end. |
January 28 - Young Banjo: This morning, I'm starting a new watercolor - working from a photo a friend sent me. He captured this shot in the New Orleans French Quarter. He captured the light and shadow perfectly. |
Another Ribbion: I picked up my paintings from the museum in Los Lunas today - I picked up another ribbon too. |
January 27 - Kamala Looks Good: Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California officially kicked off her presidential campaign in her hometown of Oakland on Sunday, promising to deliver on a series of progressive initiatives branded as a new populism. In the first major speech of her campaign, Harris, 54, advocated for Medicare for all, debt-free college, and a tax cut that will benefit working families. She additionally highlighted her record going after Wall Street after the financial crisis and spoke out against the so-called war on drugs. Harris targeted President Donald Trump and his administration's foreign and domestic policies and criticized racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia in the nation. "We are at an inflection point in the history of our world. We are at an inflection point in the history of our nation," Harris said, speaking before a large audience of boisterous supporters. "We are here because the American dream and our American democracy are under attack and on the line like never before." Harris laid out why she was running for president, saying she is doing do because "I love my country" and a want to "fight for an America where the economy works for working people." |

January 26 - Space Travel: The best photo yet of Ultima Thule and an artist's impression of the Ultima Thule flyby. The New Horizon spacecraft is now more than 19 million miles beyond Ultima Thule. |

The Golden Dragon Acrobats - This afternoon we enjoyed seeing the Golden Dragon Acrobats - at Popejoy, Choreographed by Danny and Angela Chang, create sensational shows based on centuries of traditional Chinese acrobatic arts. They make the impossible look effortless through a combination of award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance and spectacular costumes. The Golden Dragon Acrobats bring breathtaking skill, jaw-dropping power, and spellbinding beauty for one performance only. |
January 19 - Louisiana Watercolor International: These are the two watercolors that I'm entering into the 49th Louisiana Watercolor International exhibition - I decided to enter the Clarinet-NOLA in the LWS show rather than MasterWorks - that painting is a sure winner. |
Headed to San Diego: My painting "Texting Home" is matted and wrapped up ready to ship to San Diego for the Western Federation Exhibition. Mine will be shipped together along with paintings by seven other New Mexico artists. |
January 18 - New Mexico Art Teachers Rock: Congratulations to Katie Fox and to her art teacher Michelle St. Andre - you both make New Mexico proud. I'll be looking for your flag at NAEA in Boston in March. Thanks go to Sergent for sponsoring this award every year. |
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida: I was first exposed to Sorolla's painting, years ago, in St. Louis. When I first became a docent in Albuquerque I did a presentation about his wonderful paintings. Sorolla has a cheerful play with brushstrokes that I admire. Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter whose style was a variant of Impressionism. His best works, painted in the open air, vividly portray the sunny seacoast of Valencia. He is famous of dexterous representation of the people and landscapes under the bright sunlight of his native land and sunlit water. Some of his paintings are part of the current exhibit at the Albuquerque Art Museum. His large portrait of Louis Comfort Tiffany is part of the exhibit at the Albuquerque. |
January 17 - New Watercolor: I've started another watercolor - titled "Licorice Stick" (Clarinet) - of course he was playing in the New Orleans French Quarter. |
January 16 - More Art: It's about time - in a state with so much art everywhere. Albuquerque Public Schools has recently expanded its art and music programs, allowing for both subjects to be offered at the districts elementary schools year-round. Over the next few years art and music will be (fazed in) expanded to be delivered all year in all the district's elementary schools year-round. Up till now art and music was ONLY offered every other year. Director of Fine Arts Gina Rasinski estimated APS will spend about $1 million in operational money annually to allow for the expansion. That money will go to things like supplies and hiring additional teachers. Rasinski said the effects of art and music go beyond the fact that research shows they facilitate learning in other subjects or help with language development. Rather, she says as APS children grow up in a culturally diverse and art-centric state with a workforce that fosters jobs in the arts, their schooling should reflect that.“It's essential to who we are as human beings,” she says. In its first phase, art and music currently are simultaneously offered at 20 elementaries, which were chosen through an application process that looked at factors such as whether the school had space accommodations. |

January 15 - Painting Comes Home: FedEx delivered my watercolor back from the Kansas Watercolor Society Exhibition in Wichita. ... Good Bye "Dollie":
Another bright stars passes - I remember several years back attending a delightful performance by Carol Channing at the Kimo Theater here in Albuquerque. Frani's sister Mary was visiting at the time - we loved the show - something to bring memories back. These old restored theaters are wonderful. |

Photos below - Left to Right: Pithasamaine in the 8th grade, Pithasamaine (Savanh Sam) now, Cyrus (1st day kindergarden) and then Cyrus now at age 15. |
January 13 - Last of Christmas: Dreary day today - watching big snowflakes fall and melt as they hit. My final Christmas chore was putting away 59 little dancers.
