February 19 - Student Artists:
As
a retired art teacher, it was a real joy and a special privilege to
select the award winners in the watercolor division of the annual Metro
Art Show. The Watercolor Society also gave three cash awards to High
School artists in watercolor. Many thanks to the NMWS membership for
encouraging these your artists to pursue their passion in a media that
we love. I've attached images of the NMWS Award Winners.
This years Metro
Art Exhibit is on display now at the Berna Facio Professional
Development Center - 3315 Louisiana NE. Awards will be presented on

February 12 - Bit of Progress:
I'm
making a bit of progress on my newest watercolor "Tower Artist -
Mexico". Being File Manager for MasterWorks of New Mexico has cut into
my painting schedule or perhaps painting has caused me to make silly
errors on the entries. Whatever the case - this morning I plan to
correct all my goofs - so, I can get back to painting.

What Do Jurors Look For:
My watercolor "Street Vocal" will be on display at the Pence Gallery in Davis, California - starting Friday.
Juror's Statement: Sandy Delehanty
Some paintings
just grab your attention from the moment you see them. You know the
ones. They are the paintings that practically jump off the wall when
you walk into an exhibit. You find yourself drawn to that particular
painting and you walk right to it and study it closely. What is it
about that painting that calls to you?
When I judge a
show, I am always hoping to find that one painting that draws me in
like a magnet. I studied each painting carefully, looking for
well-crafted compositions, good technique, a unique idea, or a story
well told. Key elements that stood out in the paintings I chose
included dramatic value contrasts, bodacious colors, or serene
beautiful colors, powerful shapes, and dynamic compositions. Some
paintings were unique either in subject matter, or style. I found
landscapes that made me want to walk into them and feel that hot
tropical sun, and I found portraits of people I wanted to know. The
entries were almost all representational works; portraits and
landscapes were the most popular subjects with this group of painters.
My thanks go out
to the artists who worked so hard to create the 364 paintings that I
was privileged to view. It is not easy to put your babies out there in
the world to be judged by some stranger, and I thank you all for having
the courage to do just that.
