June 30 - Newly Matted Paintings: This morning, I finally got around to cutting mats for paintings. Except for the one of my bride and I dressed up for halloween on a cruise - the other three will be shipped to old students of mine. |
June 28 - Better Title: A few touch ups and I decided to stop before it was too late. I changed the title to "TentRocks Memories" the title is - It's on a full sheet of 300 lb Arches (back of an old painting of course) - but, I cropped it down with this mat. Gesso Juice was applied first with a faint stamped pattern. No drawing at all but lots of crinkled wax paper plus of course some salt and water spray. I'm glad I stopped when I did. |
June 27 - Larger is Better: I started a new watercolor this morning - for now the title is "Larger is Better" - It's on a full sheet of 300 lb Arches (back of an old painting of course) - Gesso Juice first with a faint stamped pattern. No drawing at all but lots of crinkled wax paper plus of course some salt and water spray. Time will tell what this turns out to be. |
June 26 - No Saturday ZOOM Today: My Saturday Friends must be on vacation - of course it's summer and that's what people do in the summer. I did coat more sheets of paper with Gesso Juice so I'll have surfaces to paint on. I did take the morning to fix french toast for Frani and me. Our doorbell camera captured the FedEx guy delivering my watercolor from Kansas. ... |
June 25 - Friday ZOOM Critique: More than a dozen artists showed up for our ZOOM Critique this morning. Personally, I'm running out of subjects that I want to paint. We are considering a day trip to find some new subjects. |
June 23 - Why We Paint ? I stole the text here from a post by another artist (Fred Haddock) to put with two of my old watercolors. As an old art teacher, I think perhaps just providing the paints and brushes are all we need to do. |
June 22 - "Old Shack" Finished: I finished my newest watercolor "Old Shack" using several techniques. I put a lightly textured coat of Gesso Juice down first. After it dried, I transfered my drawing. It's a subject that I painted years ago. I used "Pebeo" drawing gum to protect some branches. Then I blocked out some areas with masking tape. I wet the entire surface and stuck shapes of crinkled wax paper to protect some more areas. Then I began to paint over everything with lots of pigment - tossed on some salt and sprayed the surface. At least thats how I started. |
June 21 - Progress On My Painting: I'm trying a landscape with clouds this time - it's and old shack that I painted 12 years back. This time it will be more abstract. This one is on a sheet of 300 lb Arches hot press. I coated it with "Gesso Juice" leaving a bit of texture. I love the strange things the colors do when applied to the surface. There are lots of happy accidents that happen with this process. While the pigment is still wet I dab it with a paper towell to add more texture. |
June 20 - Happy Fathers Day: Great day today - both of our sons called to wish me a happy Father's Day. I started a new painting and my bride worked on a new baby quilt . We watched our Dodgers beat Arizona and then we split a sreak and a baked potato. I shot the photo of Blossom begging for attention while we were watching the Dodgers. |
June 19 - Our Saturday ZOOM Critique: The question on every ones mind is - when will we be able to get together and paint ? It's so much better to see the process each different artist goes through to complete their masterpiece. Scale matters as well - we keep asking what size is your painting ? Everything looks the same size on our computer screen. |
June 18 - Finished Another Watercolor: I finished another cactus blooms - I believe I'll keep painting them untill I get it right. I'm still painting on the backs of old paintings - I've got lots of those. This one is on a sheet of handmade paper I use to get in Taos. I coated it with "Gesso Juice" leaving lots of texture. I love the strange things the colors do when applied to the gesso surface. There are lots of happy accidents that hapen with this process. While the pigment is still wet I dab it with a paper towell to add more texture. Later I can add water where needed and lift back to white. |
June 18 - Critique With My Friends: This mornings ZOOM Critique with our Friday Painter's group - Perhaps, one day, we can actually get to gether to paint on Fridays. |
June 17 - Handmaidens Tale: Now we will have to wait till next year to know what's going to happen in Handmaidens Season Five. The question now is: what next? Between the severed finger in the mail and the graffiti at the murder scene, there was no attempt to keep Fred’s murder quiet, even if it did take place in no-man’s land. Will June be prosecuted? Can Luke ever forgive her for choosing Old Testament retribution over the future of their family? And finally: was it enough? Is that vicious night in the woods enough for June to finally be free of Fred Waterford? Scrutinise her face as the women emerged from the woods at dawn and we saw only a release of breath, as if she’d let something go. Is healing next for June? The fifth season will tell. |
June 16 - Love to Experiment: I've always loved to say that there are no mistakes in watercolor - just happy accidents. Now I have a whole new process that helps create accidents that I can manipulate. I love taking advantage of what takes place in my paintings. Thanks to Kathleen Conover for opening up my eyes. |
June 15 - Painting Finished: I finished my "Red Shirt Singer" yesterday and then coated two more sheets of watercolor paper with the "Gesso Juice". I think my next two experiments will be cactus blossoms. They seem to work better on the textured surface and give be more flexibility with my subject. |
Starting A New Watercolor: I love cactus blooms - I believe I'll keep painting them untill I get it right. I'm still painting on the backs of old paintings - I've got lots of those. This one is on a sheet of 300 lb Arches hot press. I coated it with "Gesso Juice" leaving lots of texture. I love the strange things the colors do when applied to the surface. There are lots of happy accidents that hapen with this process. While the pigment is still wet I dab it with a paper towell to add more texture. Later I can add water where needed and lift back to white. |
June 14 - Photography Exhibition: I'm going up to Santa Fe for a photography exhibit at the Monroe Gallery. The exhibit is titled "Present Tense" opens on June 18th. The Journal featured a story this morning which included this photo by David Butow's of National Guardsmen sprawled across the U.S. Capitol floor after the Jan. 6th insurrection coincidentally captured the New Mexico statue of Po'Pay, the leader of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt (actually the first American Revolution to remove the Spanish from what is now New Mexico) David Butow. June 13 - Busy, Busy, Busy: Last night we watched another episode of the Handmaids Tale on HULU. They don't release a year at a time like Netflix - So, we have to wait for each new episode. June and Luke are safe in Canada and are working together to save Hannah, they are reaching out to Lawrence and Nick for help; Serena and Fred greet unexpected visitors from Gilead. I'm so glad to hear that there will be a season five. My bride and I watch each episode together - I don't mind paying HULU for it cause I get Fargo and other shows as well. We also spend a lot of our TV time watching our Dodgers - the MLB Network carries lots of Dodgers games. |
June 12 - More Entries: I'm entering another juried exhibition - This time Watercolor West - I could not use my newest experiments because Watercolor West is limited to transparent color on a paper surface - so I stuck with older paintings - Wish me luck - at least it's on-line so if I'm accepted I won't have to frame or ship the painting. I'm also making progress on my new watercolor of the street musician in Santa Fe. |
June 11 - More Experiments in Watercolor: I've painted this street musican in Santa Fe before - But, now I'm going to attempt a looser approach. This is my start so far. I put a layer of Gesso Juice down on a 300 lb sheet of Arches Hot Press. I didn't leave much texture this time. |
Our Friday Painter's ZOOM Critique: |
June 10 - An Old Tree: Recently we visited the "Ice Cave" West of Albuquerque. Some of my photo were of the old trees in the area. I used one as subject for another new watercolor. It was also started with a layer of Gesso Juice. I blocked out the folige area of the tree with crinkled wax paper and later used a sponge to add the texture. |
June 9 - Finished Watercolor: I'm starting my newest watercolors with a layer of "Gesso Juice" that I learned about in Kathleen Conover's on-line workshop. It's part white gesso, part matte medium plus some water. I blocked out some areas with crinkled wax paper and some liquid mask as well. Of course I threw in some salt to improve the taste. With the layer of gesso unter the paint I'm able to lift back to white when necessary. This is a technique that I'm beginning to love - I'll continue because I love the texture in my watercolors. |
June 8 - New Watercolors: Today, I've started two new watercolors. Both start with a layer of Gesso Juice leaving lots of texture. I wet the entire surface and stick down pieces of crumpled wax paper before throwing down lots of paint. Of course I also added lots of salt to improve the taste. |
June 7 - Finished: I think I'm going to explore this new process only I'll try something other than flowers. |
June 6 - Way To Start: Starting on a new cactus painting - layer of Gesso Juice over Arches, later of water then stick waxpaper shape over blooms - than throw color on plus some salt - that's my start - now I wait for it to dry before removing the waxpaper. |
June 5 - New Members: This morning's ZOOM meeting of the New Mexico Watercolor Society was the best ever. We got to meet and learn about our many new members who have joined recently. |
June 4 - Visit to the Ice Cave: A few weeks back we visited the Ice Cave (New Mexico) with our family. One more thing checked off our bucket list. |
June 3 - Best on the Tube: Last night we watched another episode of the Handmaids Tale on HULU - just have to keep waiting for each new episode |
June 2 - Next Watercolor : I'm finally starting on a new painting "Five Cactus Blooms" - This one has a thin layer of Gesso Juice on it with much less texture. |
June 1 - New Watercolor: I finally finished my watercolor of "Cactus Blooms". It's now on a quarter sheet of Arches because I decided to crop in down a bit. I blocked out areas with wax paper over a surface coated with gesso. I was able to lift out areas back to white with this new process. |
