August 31 - Fifty- Nine Years: We are celebrating 59 Wonderful years together. |
August 27 - Shoes On A Line: I made good progress this morning on my newest watercolor. It's called "Shoes on a Line" - this is going to be a fun painting. |
August 26 - Public Art: This afternoon, I met with my city councilor, Brook Bassan, at Flying Star to discuss increasing the funding for public art. Another arts board member, Dorothy Stermer, joined us - because Dorothy is much better prepared to discuss the details of the new city ordinance than yours truly. After the meeting, the three of us checked out a piece of art that is in need of some loving care. Hopefully, we can get it added to the public art collection. |
August 24 - Portrait: I finished my portrait of Rex playing his guitar. |
August 23 - Rain In New Mexico: We love the rain - we sure need it - but they could have given us a full rainbow |
August 22 - Art Around Albuquerque: Here is a map showing where art is located around Albuquerque. I serve on our cities Art Board. I'm in district 4. On friday I'm meeting with our city councilor in hope of convincing her to support for increased art funding. |
August 21 - Painting Progress: I made a bit more progress on my portrait of my friend Rex. |
August 20 - Rain: Wishful thinking - we drove to Santa Fe for Indian Market - but, the rain never let up - So, we drove back home - Perhaps tomorrow we may try again. Of course, rain in New Mexico is always welcome - we get so little of it. |
August 19 - New Painting Started: This morning, I got a successful start on my newest watercolor. |
August 18 - Beautiful Morning in New Mexico: I got up early enough to see a beautiful sunrise. |
August 17 - Art Around Albuquerque: Today's City Arts Board meeting was very productive. The most important topic was the selection on Reyes Padilla as the artist to add his fantastic touches to the new International District Library. Now Reyes Padilla heads off to Germany to develop his design with Franz Mayer of Munic. Also on the agenda was the proposal before the city council to increase the current 1% for art program to 1.5% which would help us maintain all the beautiful art in Albuquerque. |
August 15 - New Drawing: I finally did my line drawing for my new watercolor "Shoes on Line". I put the groups of shoes closer together and added a couple more lights. The size is 20 by 17 - it's on 300 lb Arches Rough. This should be a fun painting. Someone told me that shoes on a line indicates that drugs are available in the neighborhood. But this Madrid, populated by old Hippies - so, drugs are everywhere. And, of course - it's New Mexico where pot is legal. |
August 14 - Indian Market: Our plans next weekend is to attend Indian Market in Santa Fe - Saturday, August 20th - 100th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market on the PlazaFree and Open to the Public No tickets necessary. 8:00 am - 5:00 pm |
August 13 - New Ideas For Watercolors: I drove up to Madrid this morning to sketch - But, I'll I did was walk around taking photos. I did come home with two good ideas for new paintings. |
August 12 - New Watercolor: I started a portrait of my friend Rex Barron this morning. I'm painting over a layer of textured gesso juice. |
August 11 - Great News: It's raining right now in Albuquerque - But, more importantly - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is coming to New Mexico. They will be in Ruidoso August 25th & 26th. |
August 10 - Our Butterfly: Entertainment in our backyard - it moves with the breeze. |
August 9 - New Phone: My beautiful bride brought me a new "I-Phone-13Pro" It takes beautiful pics like this one of our neighborhood Roadrunner. |
August 8 - Worth Watching: My Bride and I enjoyed watching "Jerry & Marge go Large" on Paramount+ - Based on the true story about long-married couple Jerry and Marge Selbee, who win the lottery and use the money to revive their small town. Check this one out. |
August 7 - Watercolor: Yesterday's Program for the New Mexico Watercolor Society was showing our members the importance of doing regular CRITIQUES of your paintings. |
August 6 - Fifty Years Ago: John Settich sent me this photo yesterday via Facebook: "It was a mere 50 years ago this month that we were very young delegates at the Democratic National Convention that nominated George McGovern. Here is a photo I recently found of you consulting with another delegate. It was only yesterday." Thank You John - I didn't know any photos existed of me from the 1972 Convention in Miami (I don't think I had a Mustach back then) Damn - I wish I still had that hair. |
August 5 - Texture in Watercolor: Before I painted - I applied a layer of gesso juice using a credit card to create the textured surface. |
I caught a pic of our neighborhood "Roadrunner" out for a quick lunch - on my new i-phone 13 pro |
August 4 - Are Republicans listening ? |
August 3 - Thank You Kansas: THANK YOU Kansas Voters for rejecting this amendment KANSAS CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT The Kansas state constitution currently protects the right to abortion, but this primary election asked voters to decide on an amendment that would get rid of those protections. Kansas voters rejected the amendment. This was the first test of voter sentiment after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in June that overturned the constitutional right to abortion, providing an unexpected result with potential implications for the coming midterm elections. |

August 2 - Counting Those We Lost: As we remember close friends and people we admire leave this life - we count our own days remaining. Years ago, my mother use to phone me at least once a week to let me know who in her life had died. Now that I'm 79, I am adding those numbers up myself. My friend Herman Gerber passed away a few days back. I did my high school student teaching with Herman at Harmon HS. He later became my art supervision as I was teaching at Rosedale. Even today, the newspaper tells me of people I've admired passing. Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed communications officer Uhura on the original “Star Trek” series, died Saturday night in Silver City, N.M. She was 89 years old. And now, one of the last remaining "Code talkers", Samuel Sandoval has died. Plus, NBA champion "Bill Russell died, also at 89. I plan to live till I'm 106 - so it seems that I'll be watching many more friends and people I've admired pass away. |
August 1 - My Students: I've been retired from teaching 19 years now. I keep in touch with my old students via Facebook. Recently, one of my students posted a very kind and articulate compliment about my teaching at Rosedale Middle School. I copied it here with photos of my students on a field trip. Her comments brought back many found memories of those years. |
