Letter to the Editor (12/29): This morning's Albuquerque Journal carried a story about the new American Girl book - So I sent the following letter to the editor: It is wonderful that the American Girl Company selected Albuquerque as the location for their 2013 doll, book and movie. This is a real plus for the image of our city and the state of New Mexico. But, in the story, the fourth grader Saige discovers that her favorite subject in school "ART" is only offered every other year. Now the whole world also knows the state of art programs in our elementary schools. Shame on us, for in a state so rich in art we don't offer art and music very year. As a retired art teacher, I understand too well the power of the arts in our schools. As my art supervisor use to say: "Students don't pull their pants on every morning to go to math and science classes. They show up excited for art and music and while there they go to math and science classes." Wake up Albuquerque, the ART'S keep kids in school. A wonderful complement was posted by one of my students on Facebook: "Without your teaching art and the caring you always gave your all. You impacted so many lives. I became a teacher to emulate you." Thank You, Cindy ...

My Studio Space (12/28): Yesterday, I put my studio space back together. Today, I will start painting again. I'm going to try a self-portrait. I'm back to working on Arches 140 lb rough stretched over gator board. I stretched six sheets before the holiday so I'd be ready to paint. |
Abstract Self-Portrait: This morning, at Friday Painters, I started a self portrait. I'm working from a photo I took of myself reflected in our window with rain drops on the glass. Now, that my studio is back in shape, I'll work on it at home. |

American Girl Book Set In Albuquerque (12/27): Ten-year-old Saige Copeland loves spending time on her grandma Mimi's ranch, riding horses and painting. Her school made the tough choice to cut art classes, which means she's lost her favorite subject. So when Mimi decides to organize a "save the arts" fundraiser and parade to benefit the school, Saige jumps on board. She begins training Mimi's beautiful horse, Picasso, for his appearance in the parade. Then Mimi is injured in an accident, and Saige wonders what she can do to help. Can she ride Picasso in the parade and make her grandma proud? Can she still raise money to protect the arts at school? Available on Amazon: CLICK HERE |

My Christmas Present (12/26): We got our tickets for the Van Gogh Exhibition in Denver. That's my Christmas Present from my bride. Could not get the times we wanted - but we were lucky to get them at all. You buy the tickets on line and none are left for December and early January are almost all gone. If you are thinking about going - do it now. I'm looking forward to the exhibit and keeping my fingers crossed about the weather. |
Christmas For My Bride (12/25): It seems proper that after almost 50 years that I'd get my beautiful bride the perfect set of rings. The combination of silver, turquoise and diamond seemed perfect. |
Christmas Eve 2012 (12/24): It's wonderful having the family in Albuquerque for Christmas. This is our first Christmas in our New Mexico home. The first seven years, We have been driving back to Kansas for the holidays until this year. Yesterday I took photos of our son Buddy with his beautiful family. |

A Message from George Carlin: The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete... Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. |

More Watercolors Going To Kansas City (12/22): I just received notice that two of my watercolors were accepted into an exhibit in Overland Park, Kansas. My watercolors will be part of the ART AT THE CENTER 2013 Painting Exhibition, which will be on display from January 18 – March 25. The exhibit is open daily at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center. |
Morning Painting (12/21): I got a good start on my two new hollyhock paintings this morning - I'll leave them in this partly finished stage until I use them as part of my demo in Las Cruces come January. |

NMWS Membership Form Did You Renew Your NMWS Membership ? |
January 2013 Brushstrokes (12/20): A NEW YEAR is almost here. Below are links to the January 2013 issue of the NMWS Newsletter "Brushstrokes". Also, there is a link to the prospectus for the 2013 MasterWorks of New Mexico prospectus. |
Person of the Year (12/19): Time magazine releasted their choice for "Person of the Year". I agree that President Obama deserves the honor. But, my choice would have been different. I would have choosen Principal Dawn Hochsprung. She represents all the great educators in our public schools. |

Snow on our Mountain (12/16): There may be only six inches of snow on the top - but, it's a start to the season. No mater how deep it gets on top of the Sandia - our, very steep, side always looks as if it was sprinkled with powdered sugar. |
Studio Cleaned Out (12/15): This is what my studio space looks like cleaned out. My drawing table and lamps are in storage till after the holidays. The question is: will I keep it neat after I start painting again in 2013. |
New Version Finished Today (12/14): This morning I finished my newer version of "Tiffanie's Balloon". This time I coated the handmade paper with gesso first. I find it easier to blend colors and soften edges with the gessoed surface. I like the way this one turned out. I believe I'll enter it into MasterWorks of New Mexico. |
Taos Pueblo Steps Framed For My Bride |
Cleaning Out My Studio (12/13): We have been making room in our house for the Christmas visit by our triplet grandkids. I really needed a good reason to clean out my studio. My habits are really bad, I was just stacking stuff here and there to the point where I didn't even have space to paint. The (studio) room really needs to be emptied out so I can start over. Perhaps I can develop new habits and have a place to paint in the new year. Hiding Extra Paintings: I moved my extra framed paintings out of the Libraryhiding them in closets. Now it looks like a nice comfortable sitting room. Some of my brides Native-American Baby Dolls are resting in there now. Besides cleaning, I also plan to streach several sheets of watercolor paper so I'll be ready to paint in January. Two big juried shows are in the spring - MasterWorks of New Mexico in April and then the NMWS Spring Members Only Exhibit. |

Christmas Watch Dog |
Artist Daily Members Gallery (12/10): Below are my latest postings on the Artist Daily Members Gallery. It's interesting to see how many people check out my paintings - some even leave comments. |
Jayhawk Basketball (12/9): Yesterday, KU easily beat Colorado 90 - 54 today in Lawrence. The Jayhawks were ahead by 40 points when Coach Self put the freshmen in to finish the game. Danny Manning's son and Coach Self's son both played the last few minutes and Bill Self's son made the final basket. It was a perfect finish to a great game. I watched with other Jayhawks at the Fox & Hound in Albuquerque. Of course, I passed out more Jayhawk candy. My Watercolor Entries: I decided which three paintings to enter into the Wester Federation juried exhibition. I also selected three watercolors to enter into a juried show in Overland Park, Kansas. |
Solar Power (12/8): We had hoped to put solar panels on our roof and stop paying PNM each month - they would even pay us each month. But we had to get our money back because they could not fit enough panels on our south facing roof. Perhaps the panels will get more powerful in a few years and we an reconsider. |
Doing Tiff's Painting Over (12/7): This morning I made some progress on my attempt to re-do my painting of "Tiffanie With Her Balloon". I'm using the same handmade paper, but this time I coated it with the new Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground first. I got far enough along this morning to remove the liquid frisket to expose the protected white areas. Most of the whites will get painted over or blended in later. |
Earth At Night |
Christmas Lights (12/6): If you can see the lights from space - perhaps, we should have fewer holiday decorations. Tomorrow should be even brighter when Albuquerque lights up all those luminaries. Do paper bags with candles show up from space - perhaps if we light enough of them. Tomorrow, we stroll around Old Town to check out the holiday luminaries. |
Docent Party - Food & Shopping (12/5): Monday, the docents at the Albuquerque museum enjoyed our annual Holiday Luncheon. Afterwards, many went shopping in the Museum Store. |
Party Time (12/4): Yesterday's Docent Holiday Luncheon was great fun. It also gave me another opportunity to visit with the 1st year docent that I'm a mentor for this year. This is really the season for lots of parties - Thursday is another potluck, this time for the MasterWorks Committee. This Friday is also the deadline for entries for Western Fed. I'm receiving entries via e-mail and snail mail every day now. Of course most artists enter these juried shows at the last minute. That includes me - I'm still working on a painting that may be my 3rd entry. I expect that some entries will be hand delivered to my house on Friday. They can put the entry inside the storm door because we plan to go see the Holiday Luminaries in Old Town. |
NMWS Holiday Party (12/2): Today, a fun time was had by all at the New Mexico Watercolor Societies annual holiday party. Lots of great food at the pot luck and everyone who brought a painting went home with a masterpiece. Painting Exchange: I came home with a wild balloon painting by Andrea Nichols. This annual exchange is not only fun, but each year it helps fill your house with fantastic art done by your friends. |
Taking Placitas Exhibit Down (12/1): This morning I'm picking up my watercolors in Placitas. Tomorrow, the watercolor society has it's annual Holiday Party at the Albuquerque museum. It's always a blast. We do potluck and a fun painting exchange. |
